God did not honor the children of Adam,

since Khalid had become one of them.

By God, if they were made immortal,

    until everlasting eternity itself perished,

and the land were made a conveyance for them,

and the sea, wherever the traveler set his course,

and they subdued the jinn, who then submitted to them,

and the ifrit and the marid yielded,

and Time became solicitous toward them,

as though, in his kindness, he were a father,

and fortunes stood on an equal footing,

so no one was envied and no one was envious,

and there were neither disease nor infirmity,

so life was clear, its draught cool,

and the world remained fresh for them,

like a maiden with budding breasts,

they would owe no thanks, for they were united

with vile Khalid by a single father.
