Gifts from a lavish Giver: some have shielded others;
Talents of a Bestower whose gifts support each other
they grant you reward for those lost, or leave you content.
Rewarding you for tending them or being pleased

فأعفىso He spared شبيهthe like of الكلthe whole واخْتَرمَand cut off البعضاa part
Sons—God granted you a band of them;
God brought you an elite group of brave men
so He spared almost the whole, and cut off a part.
Exempting the like and choosing some
طوىfolded away واحداًone منهمof them وبقّىand preserved ثلاثةًthree
أعاركهُمْlent them to you مَنthe One who أَحسَنَexcelled at البسطgiving freely والقبضاand taking away
He folded one of them away and preserved three;
Furling one and leaving three
the One who excels in giving and taking had lent them to you.
He loaned them to you, with excellent giving and withholding
وأعطاكand gave you ماwhat تهواهُyou desire it منof كلevery صالحٍgood thing
وزادكand gave you more طَولاًbounty يملأfills الطولlength والعرضاand breadth
And He gave you what you desire of every good thing,
Giving you all the good you wish
and granted you further bounty, filling length and breadth.
Adding length to fill length and breadth
ولاand never زلتَmay you cease to be فيin الأعمارlifespans خالفَthe survivor of معشرٍa company
وسابقهمand outstripping them فيin كلّevery مكرمةٍnoble deed ركْضاat a run
And may you ever outlive your fellows in years,
You still, in lifetimes, opposed a group
and race ahead of them in every noble deed.
And raced ahead of them in every honored sprint

وأهونَهُمand the least attached among them مالاًto wealth وأكرمهمand their noblest عِرضاin honor
People of merit reckon you their foremost in wisdom,
The virtuous count you most virtuous, protection
the least attached to wealth, and the noblest in honor.
And least moneyed, but most honorable of repute
تُنيلyou give فتعتدُّand so you reckon الثناءpraise نوافلاًas extra gifts
تنفّلُهاyou are granted them as extras والفضلwhile bounty تبذُلهyou bestow it فرْضاas a duty
You give, counting praise as extra gifts
You obtain praise overflowing
bestowed on you, while you dispense bounty as a duty.
Which you allocate freely, obligatorily

And may what you choose and love never cease
That which you choose and love
to accord with the irrevocable decree that is ordained.
Is matched by the decree of fate decreed

يدُthe hand الدهرof time غصناًa branch منfrom غصونِكمyour branches غضّاtender
Console yourself for the departed, though in his loss
Be consoled for the past, even if you were hurt
time's hand has broken a tender branch of your boughs.
By the hand of time breaking off one of your branches, fresh
وكنand be ماجداًnoble لمdid not يُغضforbear عندat هضيمةٍan affront
فلماthen when أحبّdesired اللّهGod إغضاءَهُhis forbearance أغضىhe forbore
And be a noble man who never overlooked an affront,
And be glorious, who anger does not diminish
yet, when God desired his forbearance, forbore.
So when God loved to subdue it, it was subdued

And count what time has now reclaimed
He who the times usurped shall be accounted
as a treasure with God, never squandered—or a loan.
To God a treasure which does not waste or diminish

علىover جِلَّةthe greatest of الأملاكkings إمضاءُthe enforcement of ماwhat أمضىHe has decreed
For He who brings affairs to pass is sovereign
For that which accomplishes matters has a King
over the mightiest kings in enforcing what He has decreed.
Above all kings, ratifying what was ratified

And the world has tested your inner mettle,
You reached the times the tidings from you
and found only patience and unalloyed generosity.
But did not reach, save patience and pure generosity

And you, sons of Wahb, have been our rain and our light;
You were, O Banū Wahb, our life and light
so be the sky, and let others be the earth.
So be sky, and let none else be land

And if you have indeed barred me and deprived me,
If you have deprived me and dismissed me
then you have heaped denial upon me and wounded me with rejection.
Stinting while causing me ample pain in refusal
