Faces gazed into the faces of my verse,

lavishly endowed with ugliness before their creation.

So they became scornful of it,

and what they condemned had come from themselves.

In its polish they saw images from

    it—ugly ones—and so they displayed a scowl.

God bears witness that, at that moment,

they afflicted the unharmed and blemished the healthy.

They saw their own ugliness in it and so loathed it,

acting unjustly there, with blatant injustice.

And the faces of radiant people saw it,

and found its face radiant and fair.

    Thus the polished mirror conveys

what stands before it, with eloquence and clarity.

And mirrors show the beautiful as beautiful,

and likewise show the ugly as ugly.

Take her, O Saʿīd, radiant and virginal,

with her you heal the wounded heart:

a parable for minds that falter, while poetry

is refined, so you do not see it as ugly.
