Even if, in folly, they have kept Abu al-Fadl from me,

they have not kept from me the searing ache of longing for him.

And his distance has only brought him nearer,

despite his enviers’ fury at my affection.

They say, “You will forget him once his absence grows long.”

Yet losing him has only made me more absorbed in him.

Nor has the All-Merciful known me to have forgotten him,

nor has the slanderers’ scheming swayed me from my pledge.
