أتود أنك تجتني ثمر العلا
عفواًwithout effort وأنكwhile you are فيin طباعthe disposition of الجوهريal-Jawhari
عفواً وأنك في طباع الجوهري
Do you wish to reap the fruit of eminence
Without effort, though you share al-Jawhari's nature,
أوor كالذيlike the man whose فسدتwent astray قَعيدةُwife بيتهhis house
أو كالذي فسدت قَعيدةُ بيته
فأحالَso he turned يضربto beating ظهرthe back of طيرٍa bird أبترtailless
فأحالَ يضرب ظهر طيرٍ أبتر
Or are like the man whose wife went astray,
So he took to beating the back of a tailless bird?
لاno والذيby Him who جعلmade البيانَeloquence مقسماًapportioned
لا والذي جعل البيانَ مقسماً
بينamong الورىhumankind وأجلَّand made great حظَّthe share of البحتريal-Buhturi
بين الورى وأجلَّ حظَّ البحتري
No, by Him who apportioned eloquence
Among humankind and made al-Buhturi's share great:
ماnot ودَّwould wish ذاthis ذوone possessing مِرّةٍsound judgment ولوeven if أنهthat he
ما ودَّ ذا ذو مِرّةٍ ولو أنه
نالتreached يداهhis two hands عطارداًMercury والمشتريand Jupiter
نالت يداه عطارداً والمشتري
No man of sound judgment would wish this, even if
His hands reached Mercury and Jupiter.
