Do not turn away, you two, from the traces of the dwellings

that have become fare for descending calamities,

left defenseless before a pouring torrent

at times, and at times before abundant windblown dust,

from every dark cloud with cracking fingers,

and every swift wind with a trailing train,

until they seemed never to have been inhabited.

Time assailed in them one who would not fight,

like an avenger demanding redress for wrongs,

and was not deterred from the humbled ruins,

submissive, their remnants sunk in obscurity.

And you will never find it heedless of the heedless,

    nor gracious when it deals.

May no bounty flow from Time, that dealer:

courteous to one who offers no courtesy,

scheming against one who never schemes,

cloaked in guile against mighty men,

    its course encompassing chieftains,

destroying what it builds without pickaxes.

Turn aside, my two friends, from your swift she-camels,

as one who cherishes a home for its people turns.

Let us don the remnants of tattered robes—

    of former haunts, not garments:

striped cloaks may be preserved in tatters.

May rain bless them, when we were amid lush thickets

of our life, with its deep, sheltering shades,

like dew-drenched mornings and late afternoons,

amid the north wind's moist breaths.

Ah, for them, while the shade still lingered,

and Time had not weighed upon our shoulders!

    نَبكِ مع الوُرْقِ بها الهوادل

    Pass, you two, by our withering gardens;

let us weep with their cooing gray doves

over the haunts of days and nights—

not dark ones, by God, nor overlong.

    لا تُعرِضا عنها بوجهٍ خاذل

    Incline toward them as a loving friend inclines;

do not turn from them with a forsaking face,

by the right of their slow-stepping white gazelles,

their supple virgins and their mothers with young,

even though we pine for those grudging beauties,

    who ask, without any intercessors,

    المُوقظات للهوى الغوافل

    the purest love from the courting lover's heart;

who awaken passion while themselves oblivious,

    carefree themselves, yet preoccupying others,

who ravage a man who ravages no one,

and breathe spells—the sorcery of Babylon—

through eyes both sound and languidly sick.

    Ah, for those languid eyes,

counted in the arsenal of blades!

They stole from the wild-cattle herds of the thickets

    kohl-dark eyes that need no kohl-pots;

kohl was traced for them without applicators.

What poor substitutes are the wild gazelles!

And those who silence the tongues of anklets,

as they silence the tongues of reproaching women,

who stretch toward the one who offers

white, smooth fingers untouched by labor,

    neither coarse nor wasted thin,

joining palms whose channels are fragrant.

O what palms, and what fingers,

snatching our wits while bestowing gifts!

At first glance, the beholder fancies them

    ingots set in silver strips;

with them the distracted man's heart-core is plucked.

I warned you of the fair ones: halt, or seek refuge!

They are foes in the guise of dear companions.

Where can you escape a passion that slips in

    through those subtle entrances?

They reach even kings within their strongholds,

wild cows with snares spread wide

for valiant lions in their thickets.

Ah, those jesters so deadly earnest with us,

who cure madness and themselves drive mad,

who spend the summer heat in gauzy shifts,

and the cold in silk and patterned robes,

lined with sable and pelican skins!

    Those adorned women—no, rather unadorned—

who cast off the gifts of givers

from a proud neck disdainful of wooing messengers,

content with the gifts of their Maker.

Yet sometimes they arm themselves for a lover,

    فزُرْتَهُ في العُددِ الكوامِل

    not a schemer, nor a fighter;

then you visit him in full array,

of jewels rich in jingling sounds,

and splendid raiment, not everyday wear,

    and musk suffusing their skins,

    and ambergris scattered like dust-clouds.

They cry: 'Is there a knight to face us?'

Woe, and woe again, to the son of a bereft mother

who faces champions, sons of mourning women!

    Among the mighty, terrifying temptations

are choice pearls upon choice beauties,

    in their splendid, swaggering brocade,

and pure musk, like blood from the arm-veins.

God slay them—what slayers they are!

Felling with guile, or slyly deceiving,

    dazzling when adorned, bewitching unadorned,

they meet us in their swaying sashes,

more overbearing than heroes in sword-belts.

They sway the joints of supple spears—

spears of backs, not spears of squadrons.

Between their upper reaches and their lower

    spread locks with curling chains,

like night, their curtains hanging down,

to cheeks with a flowing sheen,

as though they were polishers' blades,

    colored, but not with fading dyes;

to mouths whose springs are sweet,

like daisies of the pouring rains,

    إلى ثُدِيٍّ فُرَّغٍ حوافل

    with saliva like the honey-gatherer's honey;

    to breasts, empty yet full,

    gazing toward their unadorned necks,

upon chests that are not shriveled.

From them a husband's hand touches

    pomegranates neither harvested nor basketed,

of every lush beauty, sweet in disposition,

soft, with a lover wasting away,

lovely as hope coming to meet you,

in youthful years slow to depart,

    إن قلتَ مثلَ البدرِ لم تُماثل

    with neither likenesses nor equals.

    Say 'like the full moon,' and you have not matched her;

or say 'like the sun,' and you have not equaled her.

    Swaying above a towering dune,

    عرِّجْ على آيٍ لهنّ مائل

    quivering beneath a bending branch.

    Turn, yearning, toward the traces they left;

then ask for rain, after streaming tears,

for that place; linger by its tents and question them.

    عليه فاربَعْ لا على الجنادل

    Keep faith with their covenant, though it has changed;

halt for that, not for the stones,

nor for the kneeling-place of that camel herd.

What worth is your holding back the camels

in a halt to tell or seek tidings?

    No—leave jesting to every jester,

and turn from falsehood that has no substance.

The departing deserter's covenant has departed.

Why should the slain preserve the slayer's pledge?

Why should the faithful keep ties with the faithless,

at a station exposed to the reproacher,

that makes your sound judgment seem foolish,

reviving sickness upon its lingering scars?

That is not fitting for a man of reason.

and patience is among the best resorts a man may reach.

seek success, and do not rely on others.

perhaps you may gain a giver's bounty.

How near opportunity is to one who acts swiftly,

and how far a stumble from one who takes his time!

In deliberation lies the seeker's right course,

provided the worker's opportunity does not escape him.

how different the meats of the cook and the snatcher!

Overtwisting the cord is deficiency's twin,

when the twister goes beyond the cord-maker's limit.

Be moderate, then, when you give too freely,

and do not overdo it with empty claims.

    وادعُ إلى الخيرِ ولا تُقاتل

    Rebuke ignorance, but do not act the fool;

call others to goodness, but do not fight.

A driver who drags by force is not praiseworthy.

Gird up your robe, that you may trail a splendid train,

for poverty lies in your trailing hems.
