Come, let the contest between me and you

Be brought before our learned men, for they are the beacon.

Then, if your lot-arrow wins against us,

We shall desist: there is no shame in the truth.

And if your lot-arrow fails and we win,

Then you shall desist, your tongues held in check.

There the dust-clouds will clear away from us,

And the thoroughbred among us will appear, and the ass.

But if we come up equal, rein to rein,

A bridle-cheekstrap of yours level with ours,

Then peace thereafter; but if you refuse,

Then a whirlwind with fire blazing within it.

And I have, when rhymes compete in archery,

And the waist-wrap is drawn up to defend honor,

A tongue like a sword, the ally of a mind

Like a markh fire-stick, its lower mate ghifār.

Its offspring are fierce and enduring,

Undying: no scar of theirs wears away.

    Flying forth like a distance-shooter's arrow-shafts,

Their tails urged onward by outer-wing feathers.
