By my life, favor has vanished, and long has grown

affliction in its absence—will favor return?

Among my family, friends, and servant I have discovered

how little they esteem me since Qasim shunned me.

    فكلٌّ مُلِيمٌ ظالمٌ وهو لائمُ

    They shunned me, mistreated me, and tired of my staying;

each is blameworthy and unjust, yet each blames me.

Had my envier's eye seen me among them,

my envier would pity me morning and evening.

    وليس وراء الحَيْفِ إلا المآثمُ

    O Qasim, you have driven me beyond every limit;

beyond injustice there is nothing but sins.

As though you had forgotten that you are a master

possessed of bounty, or forgotten that I am a servant.

Have I neglected a duty? One like me is held back

by his circumstances from all that is required.

    Does hardship—utter hardship—leave any resolve?

Indeed, resolve is found only where there is ease.

I swear by Him whose kindness I hope will win your sympathy,

    when noble qualities stir you:

if I have been unjust in neglecting my duty,

you are certainly unjust in refusing pardon.

And why not, when you were fashioned from the finest clay

and know the worth of forbearance and generosity?

Have mercy! Do not wrong glory through me, for it is

a noble friend whom injustices themselves fear.

Suppose me a guilty slave, or one left idle,

stripped of all means—where, then, are noble deeds?

Is there no virtuous man to pity another's shortcomings

and clothe him in pardon even while resentful?

None to spend forgiveness and gain eminence,

praise, and reward? The winner here is the spender.

Only one who gains an honorable name among mankind,

by spending favors—for the spender here is the winner.

    فما تشبه النعمى عليك السخائمُ

    Rise to beneficence, whose station is lofty;

rancor does not suit you as kindness does.

Nor does it befit the beginning I have made

in kindness, that vengeance should give cause for complaint against it.

Suppose admission to you has shunned me as punishment

for no offense—why have the dirhams shunned me?

Can the standing of dirhams rise so high that they are seen

rivaling you in shunning those you oppose?

That is precluded by God's raising you above them,

and by your being free of a miser's failings.

A man like you does not argue while his opponent hungers,

but argues when his opponent has eaten.

    فقد يُعْدم التقريبُ والبِرُّ دائمُ

    So feed me, then inflict painful distance as correction;

closeness may be denied while kindness endures.

How often has estrangement acted foolishly while forbearance stayed silent,

and withholding acted rashly while generosity restrained its anger!

Correct me with something short of starvation, for it is

    sharp arrows—no, cleaving swords.

Punish me with praiseworthy punishment, for

the basest men can spare you the blameworthy kind.

Better than even good punishment is to forgo it,

when noble men turn the matter over in their minds.

Your servant finds it grievous to turn his concern

to mere sustenance, but his plight grows grave.

A distraction keeps his ambition from aspiring to

your favor, though his attempts to win it have exhausted him.

Still, I have no choice but to seek it,

though they call me deluded, though they call me a dreamer.

    فذاك سميعٌ لؤْمُهُ مُتصاممُ

    So listen to me with an attentive ear;

a man may hear while his baseness feigns deafness.

Has Qays ibn Asim monopolized forbearance

to your exclusion, though Qays and Asim are not a tenth of you?

And has Hatim alone claimed generosity, excluding you,

along with Ka'b, though Ka'b and Hatim are not a tenth of you?

God forbid—He who gave you what you deserve

of faith and worldly fortune, while your foe is humbled!

You have feigned sleep toward me after long solicitude,

while relentless calamities have bitten into me.

Would that I knew—may you never lack well-being

and blessings beneath whose shade life is gentle—

when the world will look upon me with a glance

from your eye toward me, you who feign sleep.

Then I shall rise, with joy allied

to my heart's little daughters, and time at peace.

My day will be sunlit by the radiance of your face,

bright, yet cloudy with the downpour from your hands.

Indeed, punishing me is a breach in generosity,

as though I were a peer, an equal standing against you.

Pardon the lapse you suspect in me; you have always

pardoned offenses for which throats are slit.

No claim is owed by me; but suppose there is—then grant it to me,

for you are the lavish giver, not the haughty man.

You are the noble man, wholly noble in his deeds,

when you waive your claim while it still stands.

How noble an adversary who sells his claim to generosity

and prefers glory's claim even while disputing!

Especially when the adversary is an empowered judge,

to whom cases and immense gifts are entrusted.

if his opponent will not surrender his, though that opponent is judge?

How can one who condemns an offense be just,

if his judgments and the offenses amount to the same?

harsh ones; nose-rings, too, led him to you.

consider long: has anyone regretted forgiveness?

and my share, for I am in wretched straits, downcast.

I will turn away my eyes, but my heart remains constant.

as circling gazelles glance at water.

for all that Abd Shams and Hashim possessed.

and reject it with a cutting refusal.

willingly like that? I would indeed be sinful then.

whose farthest branches reach the rising stars.

would that my soul knew how it could sever ties!

And why not, since you both have made my path clear,

so that its guidance speaks plainly and hides nothing?

By the light of the two Farqad stars I found guidance,

and my heart is enamored of this one and that.

when the Lord of wealth and poverty both gives and withholds?

upon me, nor brought to life what you conceal.

your enemies, nor allied with those you do not ally with.

interprets for me, and eyes are interpreters.

embracing and kissing with its glances?

uncharted wastes with landmarks for the discerning.

but a guesser may cast guesses at the unseen.

when the ignorant pretender grows overbearing.

indeed a virtue, but men have their pride.

    وسُولم بَدءاً فأتلى لا يسالمُ

    who, offered peace first, swears he will not make peace;

pelting with evil one who does not pelt back.

their bounty; have I any cause to revile kings?

when none can demolish what good fortune builds?

What keeps me from such unruliness is that I

and that I am grateful for favors which have come

to place their rings around the necks of mankind.

    no path, nor the community a just unifier;

one by whose gifts our souls live,

and by whose setting the world right battles die?

A man who reaches evening and morning safe

from people in this abode of trials is safe indeed.

before an unarmed man, shielded from dire consequences in his dealings with me?

by my young she-camel, my saddle, and the dust-dark passes.

wide expanses that striding she-camels find agreeable.

Nothing has shaken the stout she-camel between her saddle-bows

like a free man's anger, escorted by firm resolves.
