Bān-tree boughs, with soft dunes beneath them.

How can they weigh us down, when they are so gentle?

yet the cords of union with them are threadbare.

and attained what no blower of spells attains.

are torment, but their saliva is relief.

Do not weave: your yarn is unraveled strands.

How I long to smelt humankind in blazing fire,

so the pure might be distinguished from the dross!

Take pride, for when you are mentioned among people,

—reverse the sense!—you are like musk being dissolved.

them, just as your words are obscenities.

And when I asked people about you—and you could never

smell sweet when a probing investigator stirs you up—

are sated with it, though their bellies hunger.

Rather, he is a governor: behind him and before him

lie two provinces where banditry and havoc reign.

The whores were robbed of cocks in both,

so they cried out—if only a cry for help were answered!

But for his bribes there, and the spells,

    I swear, no shit-hole would have beaten a piss-hole.

Take it easy: your leg is one branch

of four; three will suffice you for them all.

mine is to have the young men play horsemen.

How often you spent the night shared among their cocks,

until you seemed an inheritance divided among them!

    بل أنت فيها للعبادِ أثاثُ

    You are, to my mind, no ornament to the land;

rather, you are furniture there for the people.

You are the bed for anyone who has lost his bed,

and likewise your kind are females for males.

O you whose field’s manure comes from your own land,

no other—and whose slave-boy is the plowman!

O disgrace, forever concealing a disgrace,

until the graves conceal your body!

Off with the noses of folk to whom you are

a sprig of sweet basil, O you leek!
