Time passed peacefully with Salma,
And returned apologizing for all it had done wrong.
Repenting for all it had done.

Who has ever brought distant things near through gracious deeds.
Who soothes with kindness all discord.

Blessed of face, auspicious in character,
Blessed and auspicious is his face,
He kindles the fire-sticks with his hands whenever he strikes.
Striking the flints in his hands when they collide.

So I forgave the days all their wrongs.

Who found his father exalted in renown and praised.
As his father before was extolled with praise,

Bestowing a tongue to a generous mouth,
When both summarize, they give detail; when they interpret, they elucidate.
And a generous hand to a tongue.

A sultan would bow before him in awe.

I have turned my poetry from all writers
It guarded my face's dignity and reserved my praises.
With forgiveness to him, and the like of me inclines toward him.

It was he whom my resolve watched over
And saw no brightness among them but him.
And for him my countenance was preserved and eulogized.

Abu al-Saqr is ransomed—if they rise to ransom him—
I have wearied my eyes with all mankind,
By men who adulterate their deeds, while he keeps his pure.
Yet I did not see anyone shine like him.

His father would be ransomed if a people
Whoever scales her with his soul's ambitions succeeds.
Tasted their own actions - and confessed.

A plain, nor welcomed a torrent, even when it overflowed.
Those whom its hopes possessed succeeded.

When clouds sprinkle it from above.
No plains, and no floods burst forth.

Racing to the farthest goal before his teeth had matured.
When clouds pour down heavy rain upon it.

A youth, if you wish—but not in ignorance or folly;
It surpasses trackers at the beginning and end,
A mature man, if you wish—but not in gray hair or baldness.
Racing to the farthest goal, never stumbling.

A youth, if I wished, neither ignorant nor impetuous,
By forbearance that weighed heavier when lesser forbearance rose.
A mature man, if I wished, neither aged nor stooped.

The cloak of modesty lies upon it eternally
Makes its beauties their rosaries for a whole year.
Like liquid pearls, glittering if spilled.

That afterward he will see neither misery nor grief.
Make his qualities as clear as daybreak.

One who, when seeking glory, attains
From the best man ever to seek a spouse or wed.

They have merely entered the gate he opened.

Of it; he encountered glory's morning draught and drank.
They only entered through the door he opened.

A consummate man, intoxicated by his own generous spirit:
Men attained the pinnacle of glory and seized it,
No one intoxicated by it could ever be called sober.
While others attained the dawn of glory and awoke to it.

He gives jest and earnest their due:
In him is an ardor of joy from his compassion
Death when he is earnest, kindness when he jests.
Far from the worn-out soul though he travels long.

Even when the reprover of miserliness would excuse him,
He gives jest its due and seriousness too,
He cares nothing how the reprover of generosity reproaches him.
Be it deathly serious or light playful teasing.

One who, if the miserly complain to him,
Never to those who ask him for gifts.
Does not concern himself with the generous, however they are blamed.

If he says no, he says it to those who command it,
They open their mouths with the word 'No,' as he does!
Not to those begging a gift or favor.

Had his bounty not enlarged the earth's expanse,
How far in meaning from the meaning of baseness,
All its spacious places would have felt narrow to us.
When they are miserly even in one word uttered.

Through his beneficence, God's earth has become spacious,
If his reach did not extend across the earth’s expanse,
Many times beyond what its Lord stretched out and spread.
It would be too narrow for us however it spread.

Through him, pregnant hopes have brought forth,
By his efforts God's ample earth expanded,
And barren hopes have enfolded new conception.
Multiple folds more than what its Lord flattened and spread.

For glory, they would be nothing but white stockings and a forehead blaze.
While barriers to hopes folded up their enclosures.

Glorious fame would never cease or diminish.

No room beyond him, in the world or in their words.
For his actions have excelled any praise that is uttered.

The Buzurgmihr of the Abbasids, their Rustam,
If the praiser exceeded it they would find
A boulder against two kinds of crisis, crushing whatever they strike with him.
No higher ground, neither on earth nor in verse.

And they gave him from their two fortunes what he desired.

Each planet granted fortunes when they aligned.

In nobility! And what a hand it is girded with!
Peace could be made between foe and dear friend.

Destinies are nothing but what he inscribes and erases.
Its nobility. And needless to elaborate his capable hand that wields it.

Which he sets moving in whatever direction of affairs he chooses.
Fate merely records what he inspires and dictates.

As if the Supreme Pen were in his hand,
With a curb of harm: whatever he curbs with it is restrained.
Guiding affairs wherever they turn and lead.

Where you keep seeing a bow, but no rainbow.
You would see his bow and arrows ready when turmoil erupted.

And he strikes an exemplary blow with his blade,
By a copious gush that scatters pebbles when it strikes them.
A peerless strike - when it hits stone it sparks light.

The skillful bowed out, withdrew, and fled.

A tawny lion of the acacias, with a pale glow in its coat.
Of a raging flood - its currents like morning dawn.

A lion who, if a mighty lion roars at him,
A lion, when it roars, the hissing viper
Reckons that lion nothing but a yelping fox.
Would think it not a lion, but only a howling fox.

He opposed and destroyed enmity itself within them,
He did not whisper it in private, but proclaimed it aloud.
Unafraid to meet their menace, but boldly engaging it.

When they rattled the worn waterskin of threats at him, he said:
When they rattled threats he roared:
'A lion will never fear sheep rattling their dung-tags.'
The lion fears not the bleating of lambs however loud.

While ordeals increase, so too do your gifts overflow.

لولاك يا فاتح الأبواب ما انفتحا
How many a sound plan you opened up for them,
O Lord of wise and sound counsel you opened to them -
Which, but for you, opener of doors, would never have opened!
Without you, O Opener of doors, they would not have opened.

بالحائنين ونابُ الحرب قد كَلحا
You remained with them on the day of their assault
You stood by them on the day their enemies clashed
Upon the doomed, while war's fang stood bared,
When the fire of war ignited and blazed fiercely.

Until you gained the upper hand and the wind of your victory blew,
Until you triumphed and the winds of your victory blew,
And the face of truth's enemy fell in failure and disgrace.
While the face of truth's enemy fell and collapsed.

You did not transgress; rather, you were a band
You did not oppress, though you were a faction
Who made the aggressor drink the cup he had mixed.
Who drank from the cup of injustice first poured out.

I testify that the great leader of the Turks that day
I testify that the Great Turk on that day
Won the victory he won through your auspicious aid.
Owed his conquest to your support - a conquest that opened lands.

He was only like an arrow guided by a hand,
It was like an arrow aimed true by a hand
And that arrow did not hesitate to slaughter.
That released - straight and steady it flew.

بضوء رأيك حتى بان فاتضحا
You showed him his right course in helping his masters,
You guided him rightly in supporting his masters
By the light of your judgment, until it appeared unmistakably.
With the light of your wisdom, until the matter was clear as day.

Let them thank you for having endured on their behalf
So let them thank you for enduring for their sake
Those depths that destroy whoever swims in them.
The intense darkness that destroys whoever is engulfed.

قولاً وصَولاً ولقَّيتَ العدا تَرحا
You helped them with a truthful tongue and a hand,
You supported them with sincere words and actions,
In speech and assault, bringing the enemy grief.
In speech and deed, and you repelled every foe aggressively.

عَوداً كما فاء ظلٌّ بعدما مَصحا
Until you restored to them the shade of their prosperity,
Until you restored the shade of their prosperity,
Returning as a shadow returns after fading.
Like the shade that returns after fading away at first light.

مُشاوَرَاً في جسيم الأمر مُنْتَصَحا
It is but a portion of your due that you have become, among them,
By your counsel, though partial, you won their esteem
One consulted in great affairs, whose advice is sought.
As an advisor on grave affairs, one they could trust.

You are the one who, after God, restored their rule:
It was you, after God, who restored their rule,
Let an honest toiler be paid the wages of his toil.
So let the devoted of sincere loyalty be paid their due.

But for you, no axle would have stood in its mounting
Without you the axis of their power would not stand,
In the nights to come, nor any millstone turned upon it.
Nor would the millstone continue grinding night and day.

Through you, the mounts of kingship became obediently tractable,
With you the reins of kingdom submitted willingly,
And their unruly mount accepted a rider after kicking.
And the intractable were reined in after having bolted off.

My soul be your ransom, O you whose hopeful supplicant
I would sacrifice myself for you - for you are without equal,
Never fails, and whose sheltered guest never stands in the sun!
My aspiration, and my shelter however barren.

But for you, in desert and town,
Without you both Bedouin and civilized
The verse-book of your people would lie discarded among men.
Would be equally lost and abandoned amongst people.

Through you poetry lives after its death—
Through you poetry came back to life after dying,
Save a last wisp of soul clinging to a mere form.
Except for the rabble whose rhymes are but meaningless strains.

May God never strip you of the blessing you wear:
God does not take back blessing with which you are clad,
You have not walked proudly in His earth while wearing it.
For you have not walked His earth with them vainly.

How many a hidden enemy's hostility brings him
How many faultfinders there are whose enmity
Only inward disease and rancor, as long as he lives!
Does not harm you - may they live only abased and despised!

One who rivals the possessor of lofty standing,
One who aspires to supremacy along with its master,
Yet would stagger under its slightest burden.
Yet if bearing its lowest burden it would crush and subdue him.

Your light dazzles his eyes, and he barks at it:
Your light blinds his eyes causing him to bark,
Let the dog bark at the full moon's light as much as it will.
For dogs will bark at the shining moon however brightly it beams.

When glory smiled, revealing you, I said to it:
When glory smiled upon you I said to it: Laugh!
'Laugh aloud—you show neither extra teeth nor yellowing!'
Do not display any snarls or scowling frowns.

One set you racing, and you did not disgrace his racecourse;
I have embarked upon this, confident my soul is resolute,
Rather, what a champion steed's face swept ahead!
How can I say nonsense and have it be my preface!

The Imam said, when his milch camel flowed freely:
Rain your bounty on me, it will adorn me with flowers,
'With your like, one seeking more milk makes milch camels yield abundantly.'
For you give life to the parched valley when you blow gently.

Your hopeful petitioner came to you, his hand unpracticed
If you rouse me up after I had grown despondent,
In begging, and his face unashamed by shamelessness,
You would be raising up a fallen kingdom.

على قَعودٍ صحيح الظهر تامِكِهِ

ما كَلَّ من طولِ تَرْحالٍ ولا طَلحا
On a young riding camel, sound-backed and high-humped,
It is natural you would raise the lowly and revive them,
Not wearied by long travel or exhausted.
And you would shoulder whatever heavy burden they bear.

Look upon him with an eye that has so often swept
I imagine you have instilled hope within me,
Away the mote of a needy man's poverty, clearing it away.
While you brim over with joy.

كما تُجَلِّي ابنَ حاجات إذا سنحا
The falcon in your byname does not sight prey
I praise your abundant gifts that multiplied,
As you sight a child of need when he appears.
And I found in words to describe them unconfined breadth.

للمجد من طرف عينيه إذا لمحا
Indeed, your eyes' glance is keener when you sharpen it
I say, in answering the questioners about you:
For glory than its eyes' glance when it spies.
The argument has become clear, no doubt remains.

With you I began, my soul quite certain
I met one after whom I shall never care again
That I will not say afterward, 'An ill beginning!'
Whether one is stingy with kindness or generous.

أمطِرْ نداك جنابي يكسُه زهراً
أنتyou المُحَيَّاare the one greeted بريَّاهby its fragrance إذاwhen نفحاit wafts
أنت المُحَيَّا بريَّاه إذا نفحا
Rain your bounty on my precincts, clothing them in blossoms:
I have rolled up my scroll filled out by him
It is you whom their fragrance greets when it wafts.
And extended it to one generous who will unfurl what was rolled up.

إن أنت أنهضت حالي بعدما رزَحتْ
فأنتthen you أنهضتraised ملكاًa kingdom بعدماafter رزحاit sank under a burden
فأنت أنهضت ملكاً بعدما رزحا
If you raise my condition after it has sunk,
His hands poured forth until when free of need,
You have already raised a kingdom after it sank.
Like two seas surging at full tide then settling calm.

وأن تَحمَّل عنهم كل ما فدحا
It is no novelty that you raise the weighed-down and revive them,
He gave openly - his palm spread out
And bear for them everything that weighs heavily.
With all it attained. And his chest expanded, relieved.

I can almost see you granting me my hope,
While some givers, when their fingers give generously
Delighted, filled with joy at it.
Their conscience recoils from what they gave and granted.

I praise you for your great favors,
He corrected the blemishes of my life's scroll
In which I have found ample room for speech.
Blotting out defects, then made due amends for wounds inflicted.

I shall say, in answering those who ask,
He was not deaf when I called him loudly
Whenever that may be—the proof is already clear—
Like those unheeding the voice of a passionate implorer.

'I have met one after whom I shall never care
Far kinder than a furtive glance he darted,
Who withholds kindness from me or who gives freely.
Is the glance of your eyes focused on glory wherever it glimmers.

I cast my bucket, as I drew with it from him,
Through you I opened at first, my soul determined
Into a generous man who fills the bucket of anyone who draws.
I shall say no foolishness to taint my prelude.

بحرين جاشا لحين المدِّ فانتطحا
His hands overflowed until I imagined their outpouring
Rain down your bounty - it will adorn me in flowers.
As two seas surging at high tide and colliding.
For you give life to the valley however arid it becomes.

بما أنالَ وأما الصدرُ فانشرحا
He gave in two ways: his palm opened
If you raise my state after it had grown despondent,
With what he bestowed, while his breast expanded gladly.
Then you would be raising a fallen kingdom.

Many a giver, when his fingers give freely,
Has a heart that begrudges what he gives and grants.

For me, pared them close, then avenged the wounds it made.

He did not pretend deafness when I called to him,
Like those who wait for the caller's voice to grow hoarse.'

Not in birds departing at morning or returning at evening.

For your goal is to encounter in his courtyard
A sea of kindness, neither murky nor depleted.

When fatigue fetters exhausted mounts and hobbles them,
They gain ease in their strides when they make toward him.
