    Anger more persistent than the black raincloud,

    and favor rarer than a white-marked crow.

    There is no one to whom I boast of you

    who did not see me yesterday treated without honor.

    The doorkeeper admitted everyone, but left out

    my case: I was neither mentioned nor thought of.

    But I was cast aside with the motley crowd, within earshot

    and sight of the gloaters, openly exposed.

    لكنْ غُبِطْتُ بأنَّني لم ألطمِ

    No, no gloating befell me there;

    rather, I was envied for not being slapped.

    And worse than the doorkeeper's slighting my claims

    is knowing that you think I was not wronged.

    Show me kindness, Abu al-Husayn, for I

    have been among your loyal friends since long ago.

    I am one who sought you when your doorway stood empty

    of every newcomer now preferred to me.

    I would shield you, O hope of your age,

    from Glory seeing you pay a levy.

    Rather, you are exempt from all my needs

    except meeting you amid the great throng.

    حسْبي بوجهِك فهو أفضلُ مَغْنمِ

    I do not seek what I once hoped for;

    your face suffices me, for it is the finest prize.

    Rather, let me retract: you are not one

    whose affection is sought by bringing a dirham.

    You are one whose favor is best won

    by asking for gifts—and I shall ask you, be sure.

    ستُحبُّني إنْ نِلْتُ نَيْلَكَ فاسْلَمِ

    Your bounty suffices as my means to your love;

    you will love me if I receive your gifts—so fare well.
