ولما رأيتُ الدهرَ يؤذنُ صرفُهُ

And when I saw Time's vicissitudes foretelling

When I saw time signaling its turning away

a parting between me and my loved ones,

To separate what’s between me and the loved ones

رجعت إلى نفسي فوطنتُها على

رجعت إلى نفسي فوطنتُها على

ركوب جميل الصبر عند النوائبِ

ركوب جميل الصبر عند النوائبِ

I turned back to my soul and steeled it for

I returned to myself and made it accustomed to

riding on noble patience when calamities strike.

Riding the beautiful patience during tribulations

ومن صحِبَ الدنيا على جَوْرِ حُكمها

ومن صحِبَ الدنيا على جَوْرِ حُكمها

فأيّامُهُ محفوفةٌ بالمصائبِ

فأيّامُهُ محفوفةٌ بالمصائبِ

And whoever keeps company with the world under its unjust rule—

And whoever suffers the injustice of the world's rule

his days are hemmed in by misfortunes.

His days are shrouded with adversities

فخذ خُلسةً من كلّ يومٍ تعيشُهُ

فخذ خُلسةً من كلّ يومٍ تعيشُهُ

وكن حذراً من كامناتِ العواقبِ

وكن حذراً من كامناتِ العواقبِ

So snatch a moment from each day you live,

So take in secret from every day you live

And be wary of what lies hidden in outcomes.

And beware the lurking consequences

ودع عنك ذكَر الفألِ والزجر واطَّرح

ودع عنك ذكَر الفألِ والزجر واطَّرح

تَطيُّر جارٍ أو تفاؤلَ صاحبِ

تَطيُّر جارٍ أو تفاؤلَ صاحبِ

And set aside talk of good omens and augury, and discard

And leave off mention of omens and prohibitions and cast aside

a neighbor's belief in ill omens or a companion's belief in good ones.
