وهَبْand suppose خادماًa servant لمdid not يوفِrender fully نُعماكyour bounty شكرَهاthanks for it
فبُدِّلso was replaced عرفkindness عندهtoward him بنَكيرِwith disfavor
And suppose a servant failed to give your bounty its due thanks,
You gave a servant who did not thank your blessings
so kindness toward him was replaced by disfavor.
So kindness to him turned to disdain

رجاؤكhope in you ياO مرجُوّone looked to with hope كلِّevery فقيرpoor man
Then what fault has a child whose existence was brought about
What is the sin of an infant whose very being
by hope in you, O hope of every poor man?
Depended on your grace, O refuge of every beggar
أيحسُنis it fitting أنthat جَرَّbrought العيالَthe dependents رجاؤكمhope in you
وخاسand broke faith نداكمyour bounty وهْوwhile it is خيرthe best خفيرprotector
Is it fitting that hope in you brought me dependents,
Is it proper that yearning for you should drag a family
and your bounty broke faith, though it is the best protector?
While your help failed though you are best helper

Come to my aid, O house of Wahb, for I,
Your aid, O kinsmen of Waheb, for though I
though not blind, am the most afflicted of sufferers.
Am not blind, I am most wretched and helpless
