And I answered a friend when he called me

to receive his kindness, but found no good.

He neither left me the dignity of contentment nor gave

a gift that people would count as a gift.

He gave, then turned evasive: I am neither content

nor able to complain and soothe my anguish.

He crushed my freedom and, with his meager

    bounty, bound my tongue fast.

So to God I complain of what I suffer

from an age that burdens the free man with hardship.

    وَجَدَا صاحبي وأصبحتُ عبدا

    My soul was denied the pleasure of complaint;

my companion gave, and I became a slave.

And indeed I said then, harboring

resentment against the man who denied me my rights:

May God reward a noble man who gives, or a base man

who spares people a paltry gift from himself.

And may God curse the one between these two, who lures

a self-respecting man into trusting him, then withholds.

He gives the trifle that clothes a free man

in submission, yet meets no need.

    Stingy when others bestow gifts,

stalling when others fulfill a promise.

He buys on credit glowing praises,

though their prices are paid in ready cash.
