And gardens where the earth struts

with a maiden's pride in striped robes,

with patterned embroidery jointly woven by night rains,

skillful at weaving it, and morning rains.

They thanked the later rain's bounty, following the first

seasonal rain, then shower upon shower.

So they praise the sky with praise

sweetly fragrant, spreading through the lands,

borne on a breeze whose passage through the

souls is like the passage of souls through bodies.

The winds carried their thanks and conveyed

what the tongues of visitors to the sick convey.

An enchanting sight; a greeting to the nose—

their fragrance is that of sweet offspring.

An entrancing sound that, if you wish, distracts

you from all wealth newly gained or inherited.

Doves of various kinds call to one another there,

like weeping women and like slave-girls in song:

some in pairs, delightful and coupled,

and some solitary, heartbreaking and alone.

The paired ones among them sing in the

groves, while the lone ones weep the sorrow of solitude.

So the calls of the delightful ones are merry

songs that they follow with cooing.

And the calls of the grief-stirring ones are melodies,

in which the sorrow of the wretched is plain.

So whenever the paired ones quicken their merry

songs in every tender, swaying bough,

they stir the keen wit of the valiant young

men, or the generous ardor of the openhanded.

And whenever the lone ones repeat their plaintive

cries, weeping for the loneliness of solitude,

they stir the sorrow of everyone bereft of a companion,

and of the lover whose heart is stricken.

    And both sounds give delight

in their striking upon hearts and livers.
