ولحيةٍand a beard يحملهاhe carries it مائقٌa fool
ولحيةٍ يحملها مائقٌ
مثلlike الشراعينthe two sails إذاwhen أشرعاthey are unfurled
مثل الشراعين إذا أشرعا
And a beard borne by a fool,
like two sails when unfurled.
تقودهit drags him الريحthe wind بهاby it صاغراًhumbled
تقوده الريح بها صاغراً
قوداًa dragging عنيفاًviolent يُتعبstrains الأخدعاthe neck vein
قوداً عنيفاً يُتعب الأخدعا
The wind drags him by it, humbled,
with a violent pull that strains his neck vein.
فإنand if عداhe runs والريحand the wind فيin وجههhis face
فإن عدا والريح في وجهه
لمnot ينبعثhe advances فيin وجههhis direction إصبعاa finger’s breadth
لم ينبعث في وجهه إصبعا
And if he runs with the wind in his face,
he cannot advance a finger’s breadth.
لوif غاصhe plunged فيinto البحرthe sea بهاwith it غوصةًa single dive
لو غاص في البحر بها غوصةً
صادhe would catch بهاwith it حيتانهits fish أجمعاall of them
صاد بها حيتانه أجمعا
If he plunged once into the sea with it,
he would catch all its fish with it.
