    An age in which the base man's rank has risen,

    and the noble man has fallen, brought low by his nobility.

    Like the sea, whose pearls sink

    downward, while its carcasses float above.

    So endure the terror of calamities with

    a heart its forebears have raised to greatness,

    أسفاً وليس يقوده شعفه

    not displaying, in the wake of misfortune,

    grief, nor letting its passion lead it;

    لا بُطؤه يخشى ولا عُنفه

    pliant to a friend who leads it by its halter,

    neither its slowness nor its violence feared;

    a scourge to the foe, who sees it wrathful,

    stern, scowling, forbidding to approach.

    For seldom do calamities assail anyone

    unjustly without eventually granting him redress.
