شاهدت في بعض ما شاهدتُ مُسمعةً

شاهدت في بعض ما شاهدتُ مُسمعةً

كأنّما يومها يومانِ في يَومِ

Among the things I witnessed, I saw a songstress,

as though her day were two days in one.

تظلُّ تُلقي على من ضَمَّ مجلسُها

تظلُّ تُلقي على من ضَمَّ مجلسُها

قولاً ثقيلاً على الأسماع كاللَّومِ

قولاً ثقيلاً على الأسماع كاللَّومِ

She keeps delivering to those gathered in her company

words heavy on the ears, like reproach.

لها غناءٌ يثيبُ اللَّهُ سامعَهُ

لها غناءٌ يثيبُ اللَّهُ سامعَهُ

ضِعفي ثوابِ صلاةِ الليل والصومِ

ضِعفي ثوابِ صلاةِ الليل والصومِ

Her singing is such that God rewards its listener

with twice the reward for night prayer and fasting.

ظَللتُ أشربُ بالأرطالِ لا طَرَباً

ظَللتُ أشربُ بالأرطالِ لا طَرَباً

عليه بل طَلَباً للسكرِ والنومِ

عليه بل طَلَباً للسكرِ والنومِ

I kept drinking by the pound, not out of delight

in it, but seeking drunkenness and sleep.
