    Ah, many a man regrets a favor

    Which he neglected with a wasteful hand,

    ثم ابتغاها صعبة منيعه

    Though it had come listening and obedient;

    Then he sought it, difficult and unassailable.

    So the buyer did not find it for sale,

    And great was the loss in missing it.

    Until, when it defied the means of approach,

    He bit his fingertips with a painful bite,

    يا ابن فراس إنها وديعه

    From the burning anguish of the calamity he had suffered.

    O Ibn Firas, it is a trust;

    You entrusted it to me, so abandon deceit.

    Then farewell—and this is the severing of ties.

    May you always be the subject of a disgraceful tale,

    Flung into a keenly listening ear,

    Calling swift vengeance upon you.
