حيا أبو حسنٍ وهبٌ أبا حسنٍ

بضرطةٍ طيرتْ عُثنونه خُصلا

بضرطةٍ طيرتْ عُثنونه خُصلا

Abu Hasan Wahb greeted Abu Hasan

Greet Abu Hassan a gift, greet Abu Hassan

with a fart that sent his beard flying in tufts.

With a robe his clothes have adorned an example

ثم استمرّتْ فصارتْ في البلادِ له

ثم استمرّتْ فصارتْ في البلادِ له

كأنها أرسلتْ من دبرهِ مثلا

كأنها أرسلتْ من دبرهِ مثلا

Then it continued, and throughout the lands became for him—

Then it continued and became in the countries for him

as though sent forth from his backside—a proverb.

As if it had sent from behind him an example

بئسَ التحيةُ حياها الوزير ضُحىً

بئسَ التحيةُ حياها الوزير ضُحىً

والحفل من سرواتِ القومِ قد حَفلا

والحفل من سرواتِ القومِ قد حَفلا

How wretched the greeting the vizier offered at midmorning,

Evil is the greeting with which the minister greeted him at dawn

while the gathering was already thronged with the people's notables!

And the gathering from the nobles of the people was crowded

يا ليتَ شعرِيَ عن وهب وفقحتهِ

يا ليتَ شعرِيَ عن وهب وفقحتهِ

وكيف عاتبها في الحشّ حين خلا

وكيف عاتبها في الحشّ حين خلا

Oh, would that I knew about Wahb and his anus,

Oh how I wish my hair knew about Wahb and his folly

and how he reproached it in the privy when he was alone!

And how she rebuked him in private when they were alone
