    Abu al-Husayn, you are the

king who deals justly with his servant,

    and hears praise concerning himself,

and does not stint his bounty.

O you granted to us by

God, so we might multiply our praise of Him,

and in whose heights was gathered

    every peerless quality of glory:

    Yesterday I saw what

was pleasing in troop numbers and equipment,

and in the governance of a kingdom

whose course you now guide aright,

and a blessing brought to completion,

    and a blessing newly bestowed,

and a dominion that will never be

seen by its enemies as reclaimed.

    مثَّلْتُ قدرَك عندَهْ

    All that seemed mighty, until

    I pictured your worth beside it;

then every mighty thing grew small

before the beauty of your face alone.

    What, then, of knowledge and

forbearance, when you wear its mantle?

    Rather, what of shrewdness and

acumen, when you make straight for it?

    Rather, what of pardon and

generosity, when you fulfill its promise?

    Rather, what of firmness and

resolve, when you make its knot secure?

Where could your equal be, O you

    whose peer God never created,

and who were never an adversary

except to one who was your adversary?

    ء وليكاثِرْكَ جُهْدَهْ

    Let fortune give you whatever

    it wishes, and vie with you to its utmost;

for God has willed nothing but

your glory's rising above its glory.

O you who drew adornment from the

    sword—its two broad faces and its form;

and if we wished, we could say:

    rather, its two cutting edges and its sharpness;

and if we wished, we could say:

its quivering and its watered pattern,

and its forbearance with one possessed of

forbearance, when it wears its sheath.

O you who in noble deeds have mirrored

your father wholly, and your grandfather,

take this, for you have always given

a thousand coins for a single coin.

And whoever seeks harm for you—

may he not outlive his prime!

And in noble endeavors, be before

him, and in lifespan, after him.

    For no eulogist extols you

    merely out of affection,

    but in every circumstance,

when he seeks the right course.
