أتانيcame to me عِتابٌreproach منfrom أخٍa brother فاغتفرْتُهso I forgave it
وماand not بيَtroubling me فيهِover it ماwhat حُرمتُI was deprived of منof الغُمضِsleep
A reproach came to me from a brother, and I forgave it.
A reproach from a brother came to me, so I forgave him,
And it is not the sleep it cost me that troubles me;
Though he had no right over me that I should deny myself repose.
ولكنّbut عتباًa reproach منكfrom you فيin غيرother than كُنههits proper scope
أضاقmade narrow محلِّيmy place منin سمائيmy sky ومنand in أرضيmy earth
but a reproach from you, misplaced,
But your reproach, that was not in its proper mode,
has cramped my place in my sky and on my earth.
Has straitened my ample space, of my heavens and my earth.
بدأتَyou began بقولٍwith speech ليّنٍgentle منكfrom you حضَّنيurged me
علىto شُكرthanking مُهديthe giver of مِثلهِits like أيّماthe utmost حضِّurging
You began with gentle words that urged me
You began with gentle words that made me feel
to thank the giver of their like, most insistently.
I should thank the one who gave me such comfort.
فقدَّمتُso I gave precedence بالإغضاءby turning a blind eye عنto كلّevery ذلةٍhumiliation
مِواعيدَpromises ذيone possessed of مجدٍnobility وذيand possessed of كرمgenerosity محضpure
So, overlooking every humiliation, I gave precedence
So I made promises of glorious generosity
to the promises of a man of nobility and pure generosity.
To one of renown and openhandedness without reserve.
وأنَّبتنيand you rebuked me حتىuntil كأنكas though you إنَّماonly
تتبَّعتَyou followed up هاتيكَthose very المواعيدpromises بالنَّقضwith breach
And you rebuked me, until it seemed you had only
But you admonished me until it was as though
followed those very promises by breaking them.
You were tracking those promises to annul them.
عذلتَyou censured فلمand did not تتركleave مقالاًanything to say لعاذلٍfor a censurer
فياso, oh عجباًwonder للعذلat censure منfrom صافحٍone who pardons مُغضيone who overlooks
You censured me, leaving nothing for any censurer to say.
You found fault, leaving no room for any critic
How strange, then, such censure from one forgiving and forbearing!
To wonder at fault-finding from a pardoning hand.
أماnot? كانwas there منany صفحٍpardon سوىother than أنthat عضضتنيyou bit me
بأنيابwith the fangs of تأنيبٍrebuke ضروباًvarious kinds منof العضّbiting
Was there no pardon except your biting me
Why, when pardoning me, did you bare your teeth
with the fangs of rebuke, with bites of many kinds?
In reproaches of all kinds of biting censure?
أتزعُمُdo you claim أنيthat I إنif وليتُI were put in charge قُريَّةًa little village
رأيتI would consider ازوراريmy turning away عنfrom صديقيmy friend منpart of الفرضduty
Do you claim that, if I were put in charge of a little village,
Do you claim that if I governed a land
I would consider shunning my friend a duty?
I would see my friends stripped for my gain?
أبىrefused to allow اللَهُGod أنthat أطغىI become overbearing بشيءٍthrough something وليتُهُI was entrusted with it
وعلميand my knowledge بأنthat اللهGod ذوpossessing البسطbestowal والقبْضِand withholding
God forbids that I grow overbearing through anything entrusted to me,
God forbid that I should tyrannize in any way when governing,
as does my knowledge that God gives and withholds.
For I know that God both gives and takes away.
ولوand if شِئتُI wished أنto أطغىbe overbearing علىover الناسpeople كُلّهمall of them
طغوتI would be overbearing بمجدthrough glory واسعvast in الطولlength والعرضand breadth
And if I wished to lord it over all mankind,
If I wanted to tyrannize over all people,
I would do so through glory vast in length and breadth.
I would tyrannize with extensive might and reach.
وماand not كانwas ماwhat أنكرتyou disapproved of منيin me لعلةٍfor a reason
سوىexcept شُغلٍoccupation فيin غيرother than لهوٍamusement ولاnor خَفِضease
And what you disapproved of in me had no cause
The fault you found in me was not due
but occupation, not amusement or ease.
To any cause but to my preoccupation with other than vain frivolity.
ولكنهbut it تدبيرُmanaging عيشٍa livelihood بمثلِهِwith its like
تشاغلُyou busy yourself عنيaway from me غيرwithout معتقدٍintending رفضيrejecting me
Rather, it was managing a livelihood, the like of which
Rather it is arranging a livelihood thereby
keeps you occupied away from me, without your intending to reject me.
That distracts me, with no thought of rejecting you.
وإنيand I indeed علىdespite ماwhat كانoccurred منكَfrom you لراجعٌwill surely return
إليكto you بوديwith my affection شاكرٌgrateful for سالفpast القرضkindness lent
And despite what came from you, I shall surely return
For what you have done I will come back to you
to you with my affection, grateful for the kindness you once lent.
With my affection, grateful for our former pact,
عليمٌknowing وإنeven though أسخطتنيyou angered me فرطَthe span of ساعةٍa moment
بأنكthat you تُرضينيplease me إذاwhen قلare few منthose who يُرضيplease
Knowing—though you angered me for a moment—
Knowing that if for an hour you angered me,
that you will please me when few can please;
You will please me when few can give pleasure.
وأنكand that you ممنamong those whom ينتضيهunsheathes him صديقُهُhis friend
فيمضيand so he cuts through إذاwhen كلَّgrew blunt الحسامُthe keen sword فلمand did not يَمضcut through
and that you are one whom his friend unsheathes,
You are one whose friend would be sacrificed for him,
who cuts through when the keen sword grows blunt and fails to cut;
Marching on when all the swords failed to march.
نهوضٌquick to rise بأعباءwith the burdens of الملمَّاتcalamities دونهin his stead
إذاwhen بلَّحfails from exhaustion المستنهَضُthe one called to rise الفاترُsluggish in النهضrising
ready to shoulder calamities' burdens in his stead,
Assuming burdens of disgrace for his sake,
when the one called to rise falters, sluggish in rising.
When the apathetic is roused for effort by the insisting.
ومنand whoever يبلُغattains المعشارَa tenth ممَّاof what بلغتَهyou have attained it
فشُحِّيthen my jealous attachment عليهto him مثلlike شُحِّيmy jealous attachment علىto عرضيmy honor
And whoever attains a tenth of what you have attained—
One who reaches but part of what you have attained—
I cherish him as jealously as I cherish my honor.
Reproach me the same as you reproached my honor.
فمهلاًso, gently هداكmay He guide you اللَهُGod عنfrom ذيone possessed of مودةٍaffection
تلقّاكmet you مظلوماًthough wronged بصفحةِwith the face of مُسترضيone seeking to appease
So hold back—may God guide you—from assailing one who loves you,
Wait—may God guide you—from one whose friendship
who met you, though wronged, with the face of one seeking to appease.
Found you wronged and met you with pardoning pleasure.
ولوand if شئتَyou wished لاحتجَّتwould surely plead عليكagainst you براءتيmy innocence
بماwith what ليسis not فيهin it إنif تأملتyou reflected منany رَحضrefutation
And if you wished, my innocence would plead its case against you
If you wished, I could defend my innocence against you
with proof that, if you considered it, admits no refutation.
In ways that, if pondered, lack all deficiency.
