بخيلٌ يُصَوِّمُ أضْيافَهُ

بخيلٌ يُصَوِّمُ أضْيافَهُ

ويَبْخَلُ عنهمْ بأجرِ الصيامِ

ويَبْخَلُ عنهمْ بأجرِ الصيامِ

A miser makes his guests fast,

The miser starves his guests,

And begrudges them the reward of fasting.

And denies them the reward of fasting.

يدُسُّ الغلامَ فيوليهمُ

يدُسُّ الغلامَ فيوليهمُ

جفاءً فيُشْتَمُ مَوْلى الغُلامِ

جفاءً فيُشْتَمُ مَوْلى الغُلامِ

He secretly sends the servant boy, who treats them

He sends the boy to turn them away,

Rudely, so the boy’s master is cursed.

So the boy's master is insulted.

فهم مُفْطِرونَ ولا يُطعَمونَ

فهم مُفْطِرونَ ولا يُطعَمونَ

وهم صائمون وهم في أثامِ

وهم صائمون وهم في أثامِ

So they break their fast, yet are not fed,

They break their fast yet are not fed,

And they are fasting, yet guilty of sin.

While fasting they are steeped in sin.

فيحتال بُخلاً لأن يُفْطِروا

فيحتال بُخلاً لأن يُفْطِروا

على رَفَثِ القولِ دون الطعامِ

على رَفَثِ القولِ دون الطعامِ

So, out of miserliness, he schemes to have them break their fast

Stingily he schemes for them to break

On foul speech instead of food.

Their fast with foul words, not food.

لقد جاء باللؤمِ من فصِّهِ

لقد جاء باللؤمِ من فصِّهِ

وتمَّ له البُخلُ كُلَّ التمامِ

وتمَّ له البُخلُ كُلَّ التمامِ

He has indeed brought forth baseness from its very core,

He came in meanness from his creation,

And miserliness has reached utter perfection in him.

And perfected stinginess to its end.
