ولها في ذَراك مثوىً مُهانُ

A letter from one reproaching you has lingered,

A parchment of reproach that remains shaded

and within your shelter it has a dishonored lodging.

And in your neglect it finds a disgraced abode

جالتِ الريحُ في الزوايا بها يو

جالتِ الريحُ في الزوايا بها يو

ماً كما جال في الرباط الحصانُ

ماً كما جال في الرباط الحصانُ

One day the wind whirled it through the corners,

The wind wandered in its corners one day

as the stallion whirled on its tether.

As a steed wandered in an enclosure

غيرَ مستورةٍ عن الناس لكن

غيرَ مستورةٍ عن الناس لكن

مجتلاةٌ وإنَّها لحَصَانُ

مجتلاةٌ وإنَّها لحَصَانُ

Not hidden from people, but

Uncovered before people yet

exposed to view, though it is truly chaste.

Embroidered, indeed it is an enclosure

ورأيتُ الأكُفَّ قد لعبتْ في

ورأيتُ الأكُفَّ قد لعبتْ في

ها فأمست وظهرُها مَيْدانُ

ها فأمست وظهرُها مَيْدانُ

And I saw hands had played upon

And I saw palms playing in

it, leaving its back a playing field.

It, so its back became a field

سطَّر العابثون فيها أساطي

سطَّر العابثون فيها أساطي

رَ عَفَت مَتْنَها فما يُستبانُ

رَ عَفَت مَتْنَها فما يُستبانُ

The idlers scrawled tales upon it

The frivolous inscribed in it columns

that effaced its text, leaving it illegible.

Its texture worn out, no longer discernible

خطَّ ولدانُكم أفانينَ فيها

خطَّ ولدانُكم أفانينَ فيها

أو رجالٌ كأنَّهُمْ وِلدانُ

أو رجالٌ كأنَّهُمْ وِلدانُ

Your boys drew assorted flourishes upon it,

Your lads scribbled ephemera in it

or men who were like boys,

Or men who seemed like lads

حين لم يحلِفوا بحرمة ما في

حين لم يحلِفوا بحرمة ما في

ها وفي بطنها معانٍ حِسانُ

ها وفي بطنها معانٍ حِسانُ

when they did not swear by the sanctity of what was in

When they did not swear by the sanctity within

it, though in its belly lay beautiful meanings.

It, though in its belly were meanings most beautiful

كحليفِ العمى تَغَوَّطَ في الإي

كحليفِ العمى تَغَوَّطَ في الإي

وان جهلاً بأنه الإيوانُ

وان جهلاً بأنه الإيوانُ

Like one allied with blindness, who defecated in the hall,

Like the blind who fouled about

unaware that it was the hall.

In blindness, not knowing it was precious

وكثيراً يُمْنَى بأمثالها البس

وكثيراً يُمْنَى بأمثالها البس

تان ما لم يُحصَّنِ البستانُ

تان ما لم يُحصَّنِ البستانُ

And often the garden is afflicted with such things,

And many like it, garments are wished away

unless the garden is fortified.

Unless the orchard is fortified

يَخرأُ الخارئون فيه وفيه

يَخرأُ الخارئون فيه وفيه

طيِّباتُ الثمارِ والريحانُ

طيِّباتُ الثمارِ والريحانُ

Shitters shit in it, though within it

Interlopers rummage it and in it

are choice fruits and basil.

Are fine fruits and sweet-smelling herbs

وقبيحٌ يجوزُ كلَّ قبيحٍ

وقبيحٌ يجوزُ كلَّ قبيحٍ

رُقعةٌ من مُعاتبٍ لا تُصانُ

رُقعةٌ من مُعاتبٍ لا تُصانُ

And uglier than every ugly thing

And it permits every ugliness, how ugly

is a letter from a reproacher left unprotected.

A parchment of reproach left unguarded

شَدَّ ما هان عندك الخطُب فيها

شَدَّ ما هان عندك الخطُب فيها

لا يكنْ للَّتي أهنْتَ الهَوانُ

لا يكنْ للَّتي أهنْتَ الهَوانُ

How lightly you regarded its plight!

Grievous how cheapened in your eyes

Let the one you have humiliated suffer no humiliation.

She whom you disgraced and brought low

تَوْبةً بعد حَوْبةٍ من عتابي

تَوْبةً بعد حَوْبةٍ من عتابي

ك فهل أنتَ قابلٌ يا فلانُ

ك فهل أنتَ قابلٌ يا فلانُ

Repentance after the sin of my reproaching

A repentance after your blame

you—so will you accept it, O so-and-so?

Will you accept, O So-and-So?
