A group of intimates and companions,

whose affection flows alongside ties of kinship.

I always lived among them as though dwelling

in an abode of health and youth.

I was provided for and spared, bearing neither

weariness nor any kind of hardship.

I favored you with my affection and left them

    seething at me, utterly enraged.

    Until, when Jupiter's sea surged

for you, overflowing and swelling in a mighty flood,

you entrusted my affairs to Saturn alone—

and such is a foolish, luckless man's due.

I am the man whom thunderbolts struck after

he hoped for rain to bring the land to life.

Let my enemies lament me: I am an object of pity

to them—so how do you think my loved ones feel?

    فبقيتُ بين الدُّورِ والأبوابِ

    I angered my brethren, and my hope came to nothing;

so I was left between houses and doorways.

What shall I say to those I return to, after

worshipping you alone and renouncing all other lords?

By God, after you I expect nothing to be fair,

nor hope my judgment will ever prove right.

All mankind gained rainclouds from your wind,

that poured down rain; I gained only winds scattering dust.
