For the saints are a mercy to creation.

They meet whoever calls with a cheerful face.

So God sends down His mercy through them,

and admits the fearful into His sanctuary.

And distress and adversity are lifted,

and bounty and happiness pour down.

Through them we may adjure Him.

And they fall into just six classes:

a Pole, Pegs, and exalted Choice Ones,

    and Substitutes, Nobles, and Chiefs.

And the Pole, who is the Succor, is confined within the House.

And all draw light from him, who is but one.

And the earth, through the Pegs—four in number—

has not feared swaying from sins persisted in.

And the seven Choice Ones roam upon it,

going out in the morning and returning in the evening for humankind's good.

And the forty Substitutes have settled

in al-Sham—al-Sham, firmly established and most secure.

    في مِصرَ لِلأَنامِ هُم يَدعونا

    And the Nobles number seventy;

in Egypt they pray for humankind.

And the Chiefs, whose eyes point

to God, are in the West, five hundred in number.

And the Pole is succeeded by a Peg, just as

a Choice One takes the Peg's place—so know this.

And a Substitute succeeds the Choice One, and a Noble

takes his place, and the responsive Chief takes this one's place.
