Whenever I recall days gone by, away slips
When I recall days gone by and passed away,
The phantom of slumber from eyelids whose tears stream.
The shadows of sorrow weep from my eyes.
أكادُI almost أقتُلُkill نفسيmyself ثمthen يُدرِكُنيovertakes me
عِلميmy knowledge بأنّof the fact that صروفَvicissitudes الدهرِtime تختلفُchange
I almost kill myself; then I am overtaken
I almost kill myself, but then I realize,
By my knowledge that time’s vicissitudes change.
The turns of fate are ever bound to differ.
لاdo not تيأسنّever despair فللأيامِfor the days have منقلَبٌa turning
ولاand do not تُرَعْbe alarmed فلصرفِfor adversity has الدّهرِof time منصرَفُan end
Never despair, for the days have their turning;
Do not despair, for time is ever changing,
Nor be alarmed, for time’s adversity will pass.
Nor be fooled, for fate is ever turning.
