What heart has not been enamored of you?
What heart has she not burdened,
And what eye has not shed tears for you?
What eye has she not made weep?

Had patience turned toward me, I would have shunned it;
Had patience shown me favor, I'd have shunned her,
how, then, can I find it when it has not turned toward me?
Yet how can I avoid her, she gave no respite.

I think not ribs content with all
they hold of torment, nor have they had enough.
The wounds of separation they keep

Calamity has grown mighty; is there any remedy for it
Misfortune has conspired, feigning
for one weak of shoulder, deemed powerless?
To clasp in its arms the weak.

The rough-ground traveler on a lofty peak is not shielded
The rugged is unsafe on peaks
from the death of the level-ground traveler in a low valley.
As the smooth is unsafe in steep

Is like the heavily laden and slow.

If the shaggy goat kept to thickets
the thick-necked lion with its awl-like claw would not charge.
The lion would not the lamb reap

He who cherished the soul's fruits culled
reaps delights without plucking them.
Delights, nor left fruit unplucked

The winds of hopes blow their chaser
by their winds along a ruinous path.
Down precipices dark and deep

And the young man is occupied with death, so what
While for the youth, death holds meaning
can he do with the supple lance and the keen sword?
Of clay and shrouds he takes no heed.

Amr, the young man, was slain among Amir,
The young man perishes in life’s spring
and Hajib was abandoned among Khindif.
The brow engraved in youth does sleep

Time’s turns distinguish not between

The base of men and high nobility’s keep
