Welcome to a phantom that returned through the darkness!

It greeted me, revived the love-stricken, and filled him with delight.

It came when darkness had dyed, with its

black hue, the whiteness of the valley floors and hills.

Joyful, brought by slumber to the lovesick sufferer,

like a garden whose fragrance the east wind bears.

In him I saw a bān bough bearing fruit—

a full moon—his tresses made into deepest night.

How wondrous a night, when my bedfellow was

a gazelle whose glances had the force of sword edges.

I have not forgotten him, when I won him and had

with gentle coaxing eased what he made difficult.

With the hands of my gaze I plucked from his cheeks

roses, and from his mouth cool, sweet daisies.

How distant the visiting phantom is when there appears

the face of morning; in the darkness, how near!

Were he to visit me while I was awake, he would heal a yearning

between my ribs that has grown aflame.

My soul be ransom for those departing, though they

left my heart tormented by separation.

They settled beside the ghaḍā trees, and I sought them

at the bend; that was no distant goal.

I was left behind after them, gazing at campsites

effaced, a trace worn away, and a place of play.

I saw Time clothe them in a robe—

a grassy meadow, with the earliest dews.

Then my soul recalled the nights when it drank in fellowship

with one languid of gesture, tender in youth,

and a soft-voiced youth who greeted with wine young men

who had made wine-drinking their way of life.

As he stood carrying his cup, he seemed

a full moon bearing a star in his palm.

A gazelle: the magic of his eyelids hunts the lion,

though we have known the lion to hunt gazelles.

In beauty he wrought wonders; the imam al-Ḥāfiẓ, son

of Muḥammad, wrought wonders in every art.

His qualities have baffled those who describe them,

so whoever speaks at length is judged to fall short.

    His robes encompass all eloquence:

    eloquent Saḥbān Wāʾil, and Yaʿrub.

Iraq was lost through losing him; it was as though,

when he came to us, the East had visited the West.

It suffices him that God has brought him, in

    high glory, to its farthest and nearest reaches;

and endowed him with knowledge whose attainment is blessed.

And the discerning recognize love by gifts.

Measure his bounty against the rain of clouds: you will find it

more abundant than rain from massed clouds, and sweeter.

Were this festival a person able to speak,

it would come walking to you with copious praise.

God be your protector! You have built ranks

whose height Time beheld and marveled at.

Hardy riding-camels traveled to you and crossed,

in their march, a plain as spacious as your breast.

They saw the tongue of circumstance speak, saying:

You delegations have found hospitality and welcome!

The clouds of your bounty are no rainless clouds, nor have

the lightnings of your promise proved false to those watching for rain.

You clothed me in blessings that left my friend

envious of me, and my devoted brother a stranger.

So a caravan of far-traveling verse shall surely come to you,

    already spanning its sun's rising-place and setting-place.

Verse that is a lovely garden; and only

the water of noble deeds has become its drink.
