They blossomed—marvel at a garden that has no flowers
The meadows bloomed, so marvel at a garden that has no flowers,
except smiling mouths, glances, and forelocks.
Except smiles, glances, and blossoms.

Do not say the flame of cheeks will burn them,
And say not the flames of passions burn it,
for cheek-down has a river along their borders.
For it has rivers flowing around its edges.

Marvel at these radiant beauties, whose charms have swayed
Marvel at its charms inclining,
the soul; with their like, taking risks deserves praise.
With the soul praising its like, charms are praised.

They unveiled their faces; night was a coal-black steed, and there coursed
They traveled at night, time a dark eyelid,
upon it white stockings and forehead-blazes made of light.
So stars and planets flowed in it.

They rose, bearing keen blades in their eyelids;
They rose carrying in their eyelids a slumber,
were these gleaming swords, we would call them keen cutters.
If they were white we’d say they are full moons.

One of their feats of magic was to invade
By their magic they attacked suddenly
nightfall with what the dawn brings.
With what magic brings at night.

I did not ascend to the brilliant stars while keeping vigil for them,
So I did not climb up to the terraces while staying up for them,
except for the shells of a sea, all of them pearls.
Except for seashells, all of them pearls.

Nor did I behold the horizon's full moons out of infatuation,
Nor did I wander around horizons looking for trouble,
save for one to safeguard whom bags of coin were spent.
Except for her whose company the full moon seeks.

Within my breast and bedding is a passion grown old;
In the courtyard and its corners is an intoxication that grew,
that old age has only increased its youthful vigor.
And that growing increased its intoxication.

It strikes longing's firesticks; no sparks have flown from it
You see a spark of passion that did not subside for me,
for me from my gray hair—rather, my tears are sparks.
Despite my graying hair, but my tears are embers.

Within my heart, not at my temple, lies love's grayness;
And in my heart there is no little nook of love
poetry has not hidden it, since hair has not revealed it.
That poetry did not reveal, if poetry did not create.

Take from my passion what will let you recite chapters
Take from my passion what you recite as warnings,
warning you of the trials that beautiful forms impose.
Admonishing you, tested by crises.

As for curtained chambers, my unrest has never been stilled there,
As for anxieties, my worries never settled in them
not for a day; nor has caution walked amid my longings.
A day, and precaution never walked in my longing.

If my heart resists its own turning,
If my heart refused its tossing and turning,
age, by my life, has not brought my loving to an end.
By my life, my life never ended in passion.

I am the lover, and my plight is one of which they ask:
I am the lover, and I am not what is said to deserve
'Is reproach more fitting for you, or an excuse?'
More rightful from you, blame or excuse?

If I say 'he swayed,' I do not mean a bough;
If I said it passed, I did not mean a branch,
or 'he shone,' I do not mean a moon.
Or if I said it shone, I did not mean a moon.

I was fashioned like the nabʿ tree, except that I bear fruit;
I was created like a spring, except I have fruit,
the nabʿ stands bare, with no fruit upon its bough.
While the spring is barren, no fruit on its branch.

Among the parsimonious, wealth is hoarded;
Wealth, to the rich, is hoarded,
among men of high worth, wealth is held in contempt.
Wealth, to the noble, is disdained.

If I lack that for whose sake they have become destitute,
If I missed what they had perished for,
I am not impoverished while these verses are mine.
Then I did not become destitute, and I have this poverty.

I did not rouse my riding-camels when a homeland proved inhospitable,
I did not shake my feet if an abode prospered,
nor prolong my exile when a desire lay far away.
Or prolonged my expatriation if an abode was remote.

But the people of virtue, their virtues
my resolve; such virtues could summon even stone.
Summoned my resolve, though it was stone that was summoned.

The tongue of their generosity called and made me hear,
The voice of the caller called from them, so I listened
so I rose to cross a sea that was all lessons.
And stood to cross a sea all crossed before.

You see the ships sailing in their dockyards
rising to their crests and descending.
So they sail high in their peaks and descend.

Each black vessel is like a beauty-mark which it bears
Each dark one carries it like a mole,
upon a cheek of its own, before which morning is abashed.
With a flash of lightning in which dawn has its rays.

Until I arrived, and was given drink and treated kindly
Until I arrived and they welcomed me,
by a chief whose wellsprings choke the chest-afflicted.
With a chest whose downpours revive chests.

The merits of my hopes were probed
now travel has unveiled their brows.
So now the travel has uncovered their foreheads.

This is Abu al-Qasim, whose bounty is shared out:
This is Abul Qasim, attaining
What is the torrent? What is the sea? What are rivers? What is rain?
What flood, what sea, what rivers, what rain?

In these virtues, if Abu Bakr has come first,
Virtues, if Abu Bakr preceded them,
Uthman has not lagged behind, nor has Umar.
No one followed like Othman or Omar.

I heard of them and saw them in person,
firsthand experience enhanced what report had not disclosed.
So reports were best if untouched by reports.

Thus they flowed freely, and I found in it praise
no limit is known, nor any faltering of speech.
That neither limit nor bounds are known.

Of poetry, some is short-lived—flowers
And poetry in it is short-lived, its life a flower
that wither; some is long-lived—bright stars.
That withers, and in it long-lived, its life blossoms.

some like iron, heavy in weight—ingots.
And like iron, heavy in its weight.

that mars them, while others have dark irises in brilliant whites.
That diminishes, some whose lot are wide-eyed gazelles.

O leader, my description of his family guided
verses from whose breath fragrant herbs carry off musk,
What musk bears of its own fragrance.

God be praised for the modesty and rainlike bounty you possess!
By God, your restraint, which you regarded as life
You are like a keen sword, with both blade-pattern and the marks it leaves.
Is like a fresh track where the track and vestige lie.

You stir with speech, or enrich—a play of kindred words;
You provoke with words or enrich with companionship
your utterance is honey-sweet white honey, and harm.
So your utterance is gentle assault and harm.

In your hand flows however you command it
that whose fame the keen, hard-tempered sword envies.
What does not envy the sword its sharp cutting.

Such composure, from such composure, if
brown spears fall short of it, the evening talk grows long.
Spears fall short, swords are lengthened.

'Indeed, it is upon roots that trees grow.'
Roots are where trees grow from.

In my expatriation, every trouble spot troubled me,
neither a host nor a band of men was lacking.
But no flocking to a nonexistent thing, and no fleeing.

I gathered my resolve, and did not fret over a tribulation
whose fangs say, 'Far from it! There is no refuge!'
Whose fangs said, "Alas! There is no escape."

After what battered me, every battering
its red days brought on by its asinine notables,
Its days the reddest of its red days.

I spent the night striking a company with poems,
I have been striking a group with poetry
who, had they been struck by a sword, would not have felt it.
If they were struck by swords, they would not feel it,

When I chiseled rhymes from their metrical sections,
When I mint rhymes from their endings,
they said, 'Take pains for us to make the cattle understand.'
They say, "You overreached so cows understand us."

To you I came with it virgin of purpose
there is no excuse before you if the virgin seals are not broken.
No excuse with you if the excuse is not pierced.

At midmonth I did her justice through you, eager as she was;
I matched it to you halfway the month, slit open,
she would nearly split apart if delayed until fast-breaking.
It almost ruptured if delayed until the feast.

She matched you: from her come pearls strung together,
It harmonized you, so from it pearls are threaded
as you have seen; from you come pearls scattered abroad.
As you have seen, and from you pearls are scattered.
