ويُثْلَمُand is notched غَيْرُother than نَصْلِكَyour blade بالقِراعِby combat
The wolf strikes terror where anyone but you is shepherd.
The wolf is frightened wherever but you it harries,
And blades other than yours are notched in combat.
And blades other than yours are nicked by the swordplay.
ويُخْدِعُand is deceived بالمُنَىby wishes منwhoever باتspent the night يرجوhoping

تناوُلَattaining شَأْوِthe reach of عِزِّكَyour glory بالخِداعِthrough deceit
Wishes deceive whoever spends the night hoping
And trickery ensnares whoever spends the night hoping
to attain the reach of your glory through deceit.
To obtain your glory’s height by guileful way.
وماand not المغرورُthe deluded one إِلاَّexcept مَنْwhoever تَعَاطَىattempted

None is deluded but he who attempts
None’s deluded but who assays your gifts to gain
your reach—yet your reach is unattainable.
Which his means cannot obtain in any way.

He seeks an opening in your gaze averted from him;
From his shoulders he tries the cloak’s clasp to doff
yet the serpent lowers its head to spring.
While for leaping valiantly the clasp holds sway.
فساقَso it drove إِليكَto you كُلَّevery أَسيرِcaptive of حَتْفٍdeath

Thus it drove to you every captive of death,
So to you every captive of fate is led
whom impulses called toward his own destruction.
By the motives that guide him to find soothe and stay.
وقامand rose السَّعْدُgood fortune يُنْشِدُreciting رُبَّmany a أَمرٍthing

And good fortune rose to recite: 'Many a thing
And fortune stands reciting the verse of a Lord
is granted to one seated through a striver's journey.'
Whose sitting a rising for walking makes way.

Then the noble youths drew in their flanks,
So the commoners hemmed in their sides,
their station kept unsullied by the rabble.
Lofty of station, aloof from the rabble in every way.

And insects, despite their fits of cunning,
While insects with wiles of deceit plot in vain,
are not ignorant of fighting beasts of prey.
Ignobly trying the lions to assay.
فأَينَwhere, then متونُthe backs of مُشْرَعَةِthose with leveled العوالىlances
وأَينَand where بطونُthe bellies of عاليةthat with a lofty الشِّراعِsail
Where, then, are the backs beneath leveled lances,
Then where are the tall ships of sublime emprise?
and where the bellies beneath a lofty sail?
And where are the navies with sails in full array?
رأتshe saw ذاتَthe bearer of القلوعِthe sails لكfor you احْتِفالاًa muster

أَرَتْهُمْshe showed them مثلَهُits equal ذاتَthe bearer of القِلاعِthe fortresses
She saw the sail-bearing fleet muster for you;
The hill-forts espied your celebrations, they saw
she of the fortresses showed them a muster to match.
The likes of them owning the citadels’ gray.

مكايَلَةَa mutual measuring of الرِّضاsatisfaction صاعاًone measure بِصاعِfor one measure
And she measured keen blades against keen blades,
And the meadows were vying with meadows in plenty
in a willing exchange, measure for measure.
Barter for peace and contentment their produce and pay.

Though they condemn combat for the heat of battle,
And if they dispraised the sword arm’s heat
in condemning combat they have praised you.
Then they praised you amid dispraise I say.

And how much blood your swords have spared
And how many bloods have your swords defended
that was squandered among the sons of the farmlands.
Wasted by folks who good faith betray.

You heeded God and Islam in dealing with them,
You tended God’s law and the Muslim’s creed in them
and of this and that you were the finest shepherd.
And were for that, best of shepherds alway.

And many a horseman passed the evening terrified,
And a valiant horseman is frightened at dusk
though he passed the morning amid fertile pastures.
Despite grazing on meadows at break of day.
طَرَحْتَyou placed عنانَهُhis reins لِيَدَيْهِinto his two hands فيهاthere
وليسَand not يخيبُis disappointed عندكwith you ذوone who undertakes انتجاعِseeking pasture
You placed his reins in his own hands there,
You dropped his reins in pastures to roam untethered
and no seeker of pasture goes disappointed with you.
For the charger you never frustrate or lead astray.

If you have fed him full and blame has passed you by,
And if you’ve sated him, though blame comes your way
how many hungry peoples have you fed full!
How many nations of starving you’ve sated I say!

And when they sought your aid, you dealt with them
And when they sought you, to them you raced with
according to what is praised in generous natures.
Praiseworthy munificence, nature's display.
رضعتَyou suckled الجودَgenerosity فيin سلْمٍpeace وحربٍand war
وحرَّمتand you forbade الفِطامَweaning علىto الرَّضاعِthe nursing
You suckled generosity in peace and war,
You suckled generosity in peace and war alike
and forbade weaning from that nursing.
And suckling's weaning for you I forbid and gainsay.
وصُنْتَand you guarded بوارقthe lightning-flashes of الأُمراءِthe princes عنagainst أَنْthat

And you guarded the princes' lightning-flashes against
The standards of princes you kept from extending
calamities stretching a long arm toward them.
Though time makes them wave high and stretch far away.
رفعتَyou raised لهمfor them سماءَthe heaven of المَجْدِglory حتىuntil
سَكَبْتَyou poured out المجدglory دعوىa claim to الارتفاعِloftiness
You raised the heaven of glory for them until
For them you raised glory's starry roof until
you poured out glory's claim to loftiness [wording unclear].
You poured glory out haughty pretentions to allay.

فكلٌّso everyone للَّذِيfor what أَوْلَيْتَyou bestowed داعِoffers prayers
And you sought the station of the faith's summoner among them;
And you held the place of religion's summoner,
so each offers prayers for what you have bestowed.
Each calling to what you allotted, your array.

Had you encountered Tubbaʿ, he would proudly have inclined
And had you overtaken Tubba in pride
toward preferment with you by following you.
He would have followed to you without delay.

Vast time cannot encompass you,
Strait is time though so wide for your grit
yet your resolve has an ample armspan within it.
While your resolve in it is of arms widespread sway.

How often your lofty endeavors have trodden
And how your endeavors the summits have trod
with their arched soles upon the locks of other endeavors.
Stamping them with the heels in their lofty survey!

You followed your father in generosity and valor,
You followed your father in munificence and courage
and went beyond following by innovating.
And exceeded mere following with magnificent display.

He built the pinnacle of pride on a hilltop;
You built high renown’s edifice on the heights
and you were the fire on the summit of that height.
Becoming the flame at the peak of the massif in every way.

And one like you can shoulder the vizierate,
And the like of you in leadership is seasoned,
well acquainted with those who excelled in it.
Well-informed of the learned man's knowledgeable way.

Through your rising, you restored to it Bilāl,
With your rise you brought fresh life back to it
your father—though this is no day of return.
Unlike the day of this bringing, your glorious display.
فماso not نلقَىwe encounter بهin him إِلاَّexcept بشيراًa bearer of glad tidings

كأَنَّas though المَيْتَthe dead man لمnot يندُبْهُlamented him ناعيa herald of death
So in him we meet only a bearer of glad tidings,
So we have not faced through it but good news
as though no herald of death had lamented the dead man.
As though the dead were not mourned when folks passed away.

And rightly we take delight in Yāsir,
And we deserve solace in al-Yasir truly
a delight that alarm can scarcely oppose.
Whose equal is hard to find, I dare say.

سماrose قدرُthe worth of العِيانِseeing علىabove السَّماعِhearing
We heard of his loftiness; now that we have seen,
We heard his repute but then saw his essence,
the worth of seeing has surpassed that of hearing.
For sight outweighs hearsay in evident convey.
وصارَعْنَاand we wrestled with الخطوبَthe calamities إِلىtoward حماهُhis protected domain
فكانَso was لناours بهthrough him غَلَبُvictory in الصِّراعِthe wrestling
We wrestled with calamities toward his protected domain,
And we battled disasters to shield his sanctuary,
and through him the victory in wrestling was ours.
And thereby won at wrestling struggles, no nay.
وفارَقْنَاand we parted from إِليهto him الأَهلَour kin علماًknowing
بأَنَّthat بهthrough him دوامَthe permanence of الإِجْتِماعِtogetherness
We left our kin to go to him, knowing
And we parted from family in seeking his side
that through him togetherness endures.
Knowing in him lasts the kinship display.
بَدَأْناwe began بالتدَّاعيby calling one another للتَّدانِيto draw near
فأَسرعْنَاso we hastened التَّدانيthe approach بالتَّداعيby calling one another
We began by calling one another to draw near;
We commenced with mutual calls to get nearer,
then, calling one another, we hastened our approach.
Quickly getting nearer through mutual calls' sway.
فأَوْرَدَنَاso it brought us to نَدَاهُhis bounty البَحْرَthe sea شُدَّتْwere bound

So his bounty brought us to the sea, whose
So his sympathy led us to seas the flood tide
villages were bound together by channels and ravines.
Had hemmed in with edges and capes far away.
وَمَلَّكَناand he gave us possession of ربوعَthe abodes of المجدِglory حتَّىuntil

And he gave us possession of the abodes of glory, until
And we owned the realms of glory until
we set them in verse within those dwellings.
We threaded them through in that wide array.
وأَقْطَعَنَاand he granted us اقْتِراحاتِthe proposals of الأَمانيwishes
وماand not الإِقطاعُthe granting منهُfrom him بذِيpossessing انْقِطاعِinterruption

And he granted us whatever our wishes proposed;
And we parceled out wishes’ ventures and none
and his grants know no interruption.
From him meets denial or loss of grant I say.

Thus the collection of my poems, bearing his name, became
So my poetry scrolls came to bear his name
high in yield upon exact reckoning.
Towering exalted in unfurling display.

The rule of poverty had held sway with me;
While my state was poverty's shroud
then his bounty rose to depose it for us.
His sympathies lifted that shroud right away.

And the expanse of the world came into my palm
And the world's patch was held in my palms
through the favors he bestowed in written grants.
With what he conferred of missives, his royal display.

Were it not for one for whom I lowered my cheek's veil,
And had I not lowered my cheek's mask
in order to preserve it beneath the veil,
To spare it beneath the mask in every way,

And memory returned to claw my bosom so returned
nothing but scattered fragments amid scattered fragments,
Naught but a ray in a ray, I say.

I would have driven the pegs of my camp into his shade,
I pitched by his shadow my journey's poles
and said, 'I am safe from the violence of uprooting.'
And said, “From uprooting now I am safe and secure.”

Peace, O exalted king,
Peace unto you, O supreme exalted king,
in words that ask to be excused from farewell.
In words absolved of all farewells at end of day.

Peace, advancing like the moist breeze,
Peace like the gentle pluvial winds' stir
with broad strides borne by its fragrance.
In steps of its wisps’ and zephyrs’ soft play.

If you redouble your favors toward me,
For if you redoubled your patronage toward me
you have indeed found one worthy of favor.
Then you befriended all who such patronage relay.

And if you lavish generosity upon me, I
And if you lavished generosity on me,
shall surely leave you with gratitude spread abroad:
Then I’ll depart you with thanks commonplace.

praise from which the regions grow fragrant [uncertain reading],
Praise that makes regions shackled by its flood
and whatever raiment the lands wear is dyed by it [wording unclear].
And dyes thereby whatever gowns terrains array!

Whenever the faithful one's melodies sing it,
Whenever the sincere melody sings it
the strains of song flutter with delight at them.
Entranced, the melody of hearing sways.

When glory is not preserved in poetry,
If glory cannot be contained in verse
it has taken the road to oblivion.
Then it is lost on the road of loss, I say.
