قُسُّ الفصاحةِ والملاحةِ صادَني

قُسُّ الفصاحةِ والملاحةِ صادَني

فليَنْأَ عني باقلٌ بملامِهِ

فليَنْأَ عني باقلٌ بملامِهِ

The Quss of eloquence and charm ensnared me;

He who judged eloquence and cleverness has saddened me,

So let Baqil keep away from me with his reproaches.

So let the one who blames me desist with his accusations.

وافى بديعُ الحُسْنِ يقسم أنّهُمْ

وافى بديعُ الحُسْنِ يقسم أنّهُمْ

سرقوا بديعَ الشِعْرِ من أقسامِه

سرقوا بديعَ الشِعْرِ من أقسامِه

The marvel of beauty came, swearing that they

The embodiment of beauty swears that they

Had stolen poetry's artistry from his features.

Have stolen the embodiment of poetry in its forms.

أصْبى تطابُقُ شَعرِه وجبينِه

أصْبى تطابُقُ شَعرِه وجبينِه

وسَبى تجانُسُ شِعْرِهِ وكلامِه

وسَبى تجانُسُ شِعْرِهِ وكلامِه

The antithetical pairing of his hair and brow enamored me,

The harmony of his poetry and his forehead is evident,

And the consonance of his poetry and speech took me captive.

And the congruity of his poetry and his speech has been revealed.

وأراكَ تعريفَ الجمالِ بوجهِه

وأراكَ تعريفَ الجمالِ بوجهِه

فانظُرْ الى ألفِ العِذارِ ولامِه

فانظُرْ الى ألفِ العِذارِ ولامِه

And he showed you beauty's definition in his face;

And I see you attributing beauty to his face,

So look at the alif and lam of his cheek-down.

So look to the lam of coquetry and its alif.
