هبهُمْ رَضوا غيرَ قلبِه وطَنا

أيرْتَضي غيرَهم لهُ سكَنا
Suppose they accepted a homeland other than his heart:
They were pleased with a homeland other than his heart
would he accept anyone but them as dwellers in it?
Would he be pleased with another home for them?

أحالَ أعضاءَهُ له أُذُنا
No, by Him who, if He turned them into tidings,
No, by Him who if news saddened them
would turn his limbs into an ear for those tidings.
It would sadden his limbs to be ears for it

They are the meanings for which I sharpen
They are the truest meanings to which
all the body's inner ribs into keen perceptions.
All the wings of his body are intuitively attentive

When, because of them, he bends his ribs
When he sighs, his ribs
around hearts they have filled with suffering,
Cradle hearts filled with trials

longing never scatters a tear as blossom
No tear of yearning sheds a flower
without first shaking his heart as a bough.
Without shaking a branch in his heart

It is for the camels to carry us across the wasteland,
It is for the body to cross the wilderness with us
and for passion to cut our bodies apart.
And for passion to sever the bodies

How often I groped along the edge of darkness,
How much darkness did I grope its side
asking after its dawn here and there.
Asking about its dawn here and there

And in the breeze's right hand lay a message
And on the right of the soft breeze a queen
it concealed, so I demanded that it disclose it.
Whose secret I tried to seize openly

أحبّه من سُلوّه أرِنا
I sent a thought after it; whenever I grew weary,
I followed an idea when it appeared
I loved it, joyful in its release from longing.
Loving its advice “show us!”

Passion's camel-driver guided it to a bloom
Passion guided it to a flower
that clothes the body of darkness in a robe of radiance.
Clothing the body of darkness in the garb of splendor

Their pale camels recite the psalter of longing,
The anthem of yearning repeats their tale
as though they had bent them into an idol.
As if it had bent them into a curve

Were it not for the surging seas of tears,
Were it not for the abundant seas of tears
they would not have taken them as ships for other seas.
They would not have taken them as ships for anything else

O my two companions, hold back their reins,
My friend, capture its melodies
and do not set their breasts across the path.
And do not set up their chests to keen

I have seen Eden with my own two eyes, so I shall not
I saw Eden with my eyes so I no longer
seek Aden for fragrance after it.
Seek a paradise after it

And Yemen smiled at me with coolness
that keep me from seeking Yemen.
Keeping me from attempting Yemen

حمدتُ في ظلِ أحمدٍ زَمناً

In Ahmad's shade I praised an age;
I praised in the shadow of Ahmad a time
he deflected its vicissitudes with bounty for a time.
That lavished generosity as it passed

And sanctuaries in his courtyard enfolded me,
And a sanctuary deprived me by its loss
where you were safe from the dread of every doom.
Where I felt secure from every death

I do not fear there the lion, however mighty
nor the innocent gazelle, however it gazes.
Nor the shy gazelle, however delicate

The hand of good fortune reaps in its field
the finest harvest from the fruits of noble deeds,
The best harvest of generous deeds

Each day its rising brings us a joy
a joy that calls for congratulations as its due.
That necessitates congratulations

Be felicitous, so merit and delight are his
all that had weakened is strengthened through him.
Everything weakened is rebuilt by him

Time has grown fair, and I have fallen in love with it,
Time was blessed so I fell for it
though I had always secretly harbored rancor against it.
And never ceased harboring rancor for it

And he tamed it, though unruliness is its nature,
Yet I was pleased with him though my jealousy was his nature
so I now lead it without a halter.
So I came to follow him and ceased to fault

His hands do not betray his wealth
yet among the narrators he has always been trusted.
And among the transmitters he remains trustworthy

Other than what he built and founded high?

then went on seeking that very path.

Too noble to be called by nicknames
