حتى حمَتْني في المنامِ خيالَها
She was not content that I had been denied union with her,
She was not content that I was deprived of her company,
until she barred me from her phantom even in dreams.
Until she came to me in a dream with her apparition.

قالت وروحي في السياقِ مخافةً
ليto me ماwhat لَهاails it وهيand she العليمةُthe well-knowing one ماwhat لهاails it
لي ما لَها وهي العليمةُ ما لها
She said, while my soul was in death's throes from fear,
She said, while my soul within me trembled in fear:
to me, 'What ails it?'—though she knew well what ailed it.
"What is mine is not for you, though she knows what is hers."

Then she exchanged her whiteness for yellow pallor,
Then after the paleness, she turned yellow,
in shame, and trailed her skirts out of modesty.
Bashfully, drawing her skirts away from my life.

And she departed, her sash tightened about her waist
And she left, while her waist wrap had grown tight
in anguish, while her calf filled out her anklet.
In sorrow, and her anklets had been filled by her legs.

Like a white gazelle, made to stretch her neck
Like a shy, tawny gazelle, she curved her neck,
by an archer on a rise, whom she saw and feared.
Yearning for a height she saw and it awed her.

I had never resolved upon passionate longing before this,
I did not intend such coyness before,
until she showed me how it works upon me.
Until she showed me what her deeds have done to me.

full-grown riding camels that passed beyond their miles.
The slipping of feet, going beyond yards.

The mounts traversing them tore them open with their forelegs,
With her hands, she loosened the reins of her pacing,
and, after the night march, forced their way through their terrors,
And recklessly, behind the hiddenness, her terrors.

Her loftiness, her springtime, and her fruits.

She sought the virtues of gentle Yasser, so she turned
their reverses and welcoming their good fortune.
Her back, and faced with welcome his advance.

Riches are sought from his two palms, for he
Affluence comes from the comfort of his wings, for he
has made the heads of kings their sandals.
Has made the heads of kings into his slippers.

Her hopes, and her pillars would shake with quaking.

His right and left hands would have sold her.

For as long as the wind of the south blows north.
