ثنَتْshe turned عنكaway from you يومَon the day of الرحيلِdeparture العِناناthe reins
وبانَتْand she departed وفيand in إثرِهاher wake الصبرُpatience باناdeparted
On departure day she turned the reins away from you,
The day of parting, the camel turned away,
and she departed; patience departed in her wake.
And patience parted with it, clearly displayed.
ولمّاand when استقلتْshe set out ضُحىًat midmorning بالمَطيّon the riding camels
أبانَmade plain لكto you البينُparting ماwhat قدalready أباناmade clear
And when she set out at midmorning on the riding camels,
When at dawn it strode freely onwards,
parting showed you what it had already made plain.
Separation made manifest what was ordained.
لعَمْريby my life لئنْif indeed رحلَdeparted الظاعنونَthe travelers
لقدsurely أودَعونيthey left me with الهَوىpassion والهَواناand humiliation
By my life, if the travelers have departed,
By my life! Though the slanderers depart,
they have surely left me passion and humiliation.
They left me love and disgrace.
ولماand when اعتنقناwe embraced بكتْshe wept لؤلؤاًpearls
وأمطرتُand I rained منfrom مقلتيّmy two eyes جُماناpearl-beads
And when we embraced, she wept pearls,
When we embraced, pearls wept,
and from my two eyes I rained pearl-beads.
And from my eyelids rained abundant tears.

بهِof it دمعُthe tears of عينيmy eye لهاto her تَرْجُماناan interpreter
And I had concealed my passion, but then
May God pardon those I humbled, so I was honored,
my eye's tears became its interpreter to her.
I reconciled, so I was spurned, I was faithful, so I was betrayed.
عَفاmay he pardon اللهُGod عمنْthe one whom ذللتُI humbled myself فعزّbut he grew proud
وصلتُI kept ties فصدّbut he turned away وفَيْتُand I was faithful فَخاناbut he betrayed
May God pardon the one I humbled myself before, who grew proud;
The pastures of the beloved's abode
I drew near, but he turned away; I was faithful, but he betrayed.
Were clouded over, turning verdant meadows barren.

And may the traces of al-Liwa's dwellings be drenched
An abode where I cut the ropes of worries,
by a cloud that turns its hills to tenderness.
And tethered the gracious gazelles.

Dwellings—I cut the cords of care
Many a desolate place I made habitable for it,
there, and joined the beautiful gazelles.
Where at night the darkness cast down its luggage.
ورُبّand many a فلاةٍwilderness تعسّفتُهاI crossed it without a path

And many a wilderness I crossed without a path,
But that did not hinder my resolve,
on whose back the night had laid its neck.
Nor did that frighten my heart.

Yet that did not deter my resolve there,
And I said to the howdah of departure
nor did it terrify the heart within me.
Breaking its litters, and the departing throngs:

And I said to a headlong, fast-striding she-camel
Restrain your moaning, Oh maiden,
crossing the wilderness's mountains and ridges:
For no ordeal is difficult once faced!

"Lessen your groaning, you there;
Exert yourself unto him to whom the camel
for no ordeal ever grew hard without growing easy.

And press on toward him to whom the mounts
The keeper of faith and hoped for

To repel adversity when it strikes.

I will take safety from events.

I was certain that, if I came to him,
And if matters grow dark, his greatness
I would gain safety from misfortunes.
Will clarify the aspects of their shapes.

And if the ordeal darkens, his wisdom dispels
If I come to him seeking benefit, he benefits;

If seeking help, he helps.

in haste over dry rock, that rock would soften.
