O Dharawi, for love of whom

my body was as delicate as fine dust.

You struck me dead with abuse after

you had earlier struck me dead with estrangement.

And I feared my mouth might speak words that

would lay bare the vestiges of the frontier's sanctuary.

Be safe, for time's intercessors have already been accepted—

its calamities, on your behalf for all time.

I could never accomplish through verse what

the hand of poetry has already done to you.
