شِعْريmy poetry كمجدكlike your glory منwhoever يرُمْهُseeks it مقصِّرُfalls short
وبحارُand the seas فكريof my thought مثلُlike جودكyour generosity تزخَرُsurge
My poetry is like your glory: whoever seeks to reach it falls short.
My poetry, like your glory, whoever scorns it is remiss,
And the seas of my thought surge like your generosity.
And the oceans of my thoughts, like your generosity, teem.
لماwhen أعارتْهُlent it صفاتُكyour qualities بعضَهاsome of themselves
باهتْboasted بجوهرِكof your jewel النفيسِprecious الأعصرُthe ages
When your qualities lent it some of themselves,
When your attributes lent it some of them,
The ages boasted of your precious jewel.
It was dimmed by your precious, most refined essence.
وإذاand if رجِعْتَyou return الىto حقيقةِthe truth
يوماًone day فمنthen from عَلياكَyour lofty eminence ذاكَthat الجوهرُthe jewel
And if you return to the truth
And if you return one day to reality,
One day, that jewel comes from your lofty eminence.
Then who possesses that essence but you?
هلare…? أنتyou إلاanything but دوحةٌa spreading tree أغصانُهاits branches
شيءٌa thing عقيمٌbarren ذاthis one وهذاand this one مُثمِرُfruit-bearing
Are you anything but a spreading tree whose branches—
Are you not but a painting whose branches
This one is barren, and that one bears fruit?
Are a barren thing, while this bears fruit?
فخراًglory لراحتكَto your palm الكريمةِgenerous إنّهاfor it
نالreceived المُقِلُّthe poor نوالَهاits bounty والمُكْثِرُand the wealthy
Glory to your generous palm, for
Pride to your generous soul, for it
The poor and the wealthy alike have received its bounty.
The little gained its gifts, and the ample.
كالغيثِlike rain فوقabove البرّthe land ثَرّانٌcopious هَمىpoured down

Like rain: over land, a copious downpour fell
Like rain above land, soft,
From it, and amid the sea, radiant pearls.
And amidst the sea, a gleaming pearl.
ماnot ضاعwas lost دِينٌa faith أنتyou حافظُguardian of شرعِهits religious law
كلاno indeed ولاnor أخنتْbrought ruin عليهupon it الأدْهُرُthe ages
No faith has perished whose law you guard.
No faith is lost if you guard its law,
No indeed; nor have the ages brought ruin upon it.
Nay, nor has time betrayed it.

ألفيتَهyou found it بالضدِّas the opposite مماof what يُذْكَرُis said
I complain to you of my stipend's stagnation, which
I complain to you of my companion's frigidity,
You found to be the opposite of what is said of it.
Whom you made contrary to what is remembered.

موسىMoses ترىyou will see أنهارَهُits rivers تتفجّرُgush forth
If it has become one of those stones, then be to it
If he returns from his stones, restore to him
Moses: you will see its rivers gush forth.
Moses, and you'll see his rivers gush forth.

Or if it has become a piece of iron, then be to it
Or if he's made of some iron, be for him
David: in his hands it is restrained and commanded.
David, ordered by your hands and commanded.

قلبٌa heart مَشوقٌyearning عنكfrom you لاnot يتأخّرُholds back
I am bound for a journey; even if I depart, I have
I am on a journey, and if I travel,
A yearning heart that will not stay away from you.
My heart still longs for you and does not lag.

I hope for your bounty; may no traitor intend you
I hope for your bestowal, no farewell to one who forsakes,
Harm and thus win success in what he secretly harbors.
For he attained success in what he desires.

And stay safe, for one like you has fingertips that bestow
And peace, the likes of you, when you bestow your favors
Purses of gold on their hoarder; and one like me gives thanks.
Are a full moon obscured, and I am thankful.
