واعجَبْand marvel لماat what بعدَهاafter her منof حُمرةِredness الشفَقِthe twilight
Look at the sun setting over the Nile,
Behold the sun above the Nile sinking
and marvel at the redness of the twilight after her.
And marvel at the crimson afterglow
غابتْshe set وأبقَتْand she left شُعاعاًa ray فيهin it يفخلِفُهاtakes her place (apparent misspelling)
كأنّهاas though she احترقَتْburned بالماءِby the water فيin الغرقِdrowning
She has set, leaving a ray in it to take her place,
It has set, leaving a ray behind
as though she had been burned by the water as she drowned.
As though it were aflame amidst the flow

And marvel at the crescent—has it come to rescue her,
The crescent, did it overtake the sun
a skiff in her wake, fashioned from silver?
To rescue it, a boat of paper in tow
