لقدindeed فزتُI have won منfrom نثرthe prose الكلامِof speech ونظمِهand its verse
لقد فزتُ من نثر الكلامِ ونظمِه
بماwith what استصْغَرَmade seem small الدرَّthe pearls المصونَthe safeguarded لعُظْمِهِbecause of its greatness
بما استصْغَرَ الدرَّ المصونَ لعُظْمِهِ
Indeed, from speech in prose and verse I have gained
I have excelled in prose and verse
What, by its greatness, made treasured pearls seem small.
With words that belittle the guarded pearl in its grandeur
وأيدتُand I was aided بالمعنىby the meaning الذيwhich راقَwas clear ماؤهits water
وأيدتُ بالمعنى الذي راقَ ماؤه
فأروِso quench the thirst بهwith it منwhomever شئتَyou wish مناamong us واظْمِهِand make him thirsty
فأروِ به من شئتَ منا واظْمِهِ
And I was aided by the meaning whose water was clear;
And I have supported with pleasing meaning
So quench with it the thirst of whomever you wish among us, and make him thirsty.
Quench with it whom you wish of us and muzzle him
ووفّيتُand I fulfilled حقّthe due المُلْكِof kingship بالخدمةِthrough service التيwhich
ووفّيتُ حقّ المُلْكِ بالخدمةِ التي
تجرّدَdrew back ذيلُthe hem العزمِof resolve عنfrom ساقِthe shin حزْمِهof its firmness
تجرّدَ ذيلُ العزمِ عن ساقِ حزْمِه
And I paid kingship its due through service in which
And I have fulfilled the right of the kingdom with service
Resolve's hem drew back from the shin of its firmness.
That the train of resolve has cast off from the leg of its determination
فإنso if تدعُyou call أنbecause قيلَwas called الوفاءُloyalty أباًa father لهto him
فإن تدعُ أن قيلَ الوفاءُ أباً له
فحاًthen ... (unclear as written) إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle العزُّglory كانwas ابنَthe son عمّهِof his paternal uncle
فحاً إذا ما العزُّ كان ابنَ عمّهِ
So if you call because loyalty was named his father,
If you claim that loyalty is a disgrace to it
Then [unclear word], when glory was his cousin.
Then disgrace, when honor is the cousin of its uncle
ألبّيكَI answer your call ألفاًa thousand times أيهاO الصارخُcaller الذيwho
ألبّيكَ ألفاً أيها الصارخُ الذي
غداbecame منهthrough him حربُthe war الدهرِof Time يُدْعىis called بسَلْمِهas his peace
غدا منه حربُ الدهرِ يُدْعى بسَلْمِه
I answer you a thousand times, O caller who
I say to you a thousand times, O you who cry out
Made Time's war come to be called his peace.
From which the war of fate is called by its peace
ومَنْand who ذاthis الذيwho ياO بنَson الكرامِof the noble يحيدُturns aside عنfrom
ومَنْ ذا الذي يا بنَ الكرامِ يحيدُ عن
ولايةِallegiance to منone who يَعْنوbows الأنامُhumankind بحكمِهunder his rule
ولايةِ من يَعْنو الأنامُ بحكمِه
And who is it, O son of the noble, who turns aside from
And who, O son of nobles, deviates
Allegiance to one under whose rule humankind bows?
From the allegiance of one whose rule brings people together
وماذاand what مكانُthe place الحِلْمِof forbearance عنهُapart from him ولوeven if جرىbefell
وماذا مكانُ الحِلْمِ عنهُ ولو جرى
للقمانَto Luqman هذاthis لمdid not يؤيَّدْbe aided بحِلمِهby his forbearance
للقمانَ هذا لم يؤيَّدْ بحِلمِه
And what place has forbearance apart from him? Even had this befallen
And what place does forbearance have with him? And if this flows
Luqman, he would not have been aided by his forbearance.
To Luqman, he would not be supported by his forbearance
فإنْso if زاغَstrayed عمّاfrom what دمتُهI ... it (unclear verb) فيهin him زائغٌone who strays
فإنْ زاغَ عمّا دمتُه فيه زائغٌ
So if a wayward one strays from what I [unclear verb] in him—
If he deviates from what I make him constant in
