He tired of what he had hoped for in his youthful passion.
He tired of his youth as he wished more,
So ask, you two, about his heart: how did it find solace?
Ask his heart how it yearned and implored,

طالما غازَل فيه الغزَلا
The hand of gray hair stripped from him a youthful passion
Old age stripped his youth bit by bit,
in which he had so often wooed the gazelles.
Though love teased and enticed him a bit,

And reason within him forbade it, admonishing;
Advice deterred him but he turned away,
the later state effaced the former from him.
As others copied him night and day,

Among his companions a branch he was,

The rising moon he was fond to see,

Should he not mourn as it starts to flee,

An empty flirt if not for his grace,
toward which beauty turned the eyes.
Beauty transferred to him its place,

Many a night the buyer in glee,
whispering my tales to Saturn,
Conversed with me confidentially,

where I startled the wild-cattle herds in its depths
When I nurtured fate in its nature,
on a son of a veering wind that outstrips death.
By Ibn Nukba who cheats fate ever,

Whenever longing set his two flanks dancing,
Whenever he shook his twisting locks,
his gallop filled the plain on either side.
The milky way he crammed in his frocks.

A prancer, upon whom a thought roamed,
A thought occurred countered by a thought,
safe with him from footsoreness and fear.
Secured from doubt or fear distraught.

And indeed, I am drawn toward the protected grounds
My craving for passion hectored me,
by friendships that close the gaps.
With pores that block off all holes we see.

How excellent on his cheeks the mole,
upon which beauty bestowed robes.
That beauty graced with pretty stoles,

The brown therein bent as a branch,

And the fair flowed as a stream enhanced,

It reached us [phrase unclear]; I was greeted amid their ruins
Long we lived in its ruins I,
by a fawn; I spent the night exchanging wine with them.
Gave it my nights away they fly,

With his charm, strong and warm,
a dusky lance, deadlier than the one he carried.
He shook off from his cloak a brown,

My passion for him is for a spear-bearing moon
More precious than all that he took,
that, from him, takes aim at an unarmed Simak.
A spear's thrust took a leap it forsook.

His radiant brow smiled at his forelock,
His dimples and curls were such fun,
so dawn bore aloft a pitch-dark night.

beauty sprang forth in it, improvising.

I traveled toward him through beauty by a marked way,
I roamed his beauty enchanted in love,
and away from him toward forgetting through a trackless waste.
And roamed his Sallouan in dreams thereof,

My heart by him was lost and strayed,
so I seek a replacement for it.
And I seek what can for it be paid.

To Ahmed Ahmed I wished well,

Falsehood from him shrinks and runs,

Climbing high in glory he stands,

Poetry swarmed his traits to draw,
