And on a battlefield where Death folds

his ribs around the terrified man's heart,

Time stood in awe of you there, and so left

to you, with both its hands, the forelock of one who submits.

And you drew the keen sword, which was then sheathed

by your right hand in the necks of calamity laid low.

And kohl was applied with lofty spears as kohl-sticks

by war's physicians to the eyes of coats of mail.

And battle's fury kindled the fires of keen blades,

and poured down a rain of the waters of gore.

So the horsemen have, from drought and mire,

a tale of summer in spring.
