عقدَتْ بناصيةِ الظلامِ الأدهَمِ

And indeed I saw the full moon, like a white blaze

I saw the moon, a pearl

Fastened to the forelock of jet-black darkness,

Hung 'mid the sable night's thick curls,

لمّا علتْهُ يدُ الكُسوفِ كأنّها

لمّا علتْهُ يدُ الكُسوفِ كأنّها

صدأ تبدّى فوق صفحةِ دِرْهَمِ

صدأ تبدّى فوق صفحةِ دِرْهَمِ

When the hand of eclipse rose over it, as though it were

When darkness veiled its ring of light

Rust appearing on the face of a dirham.

As tarnish dims a silvered site.
