And I have a gazelle at al-Khayf in Naʿman,

who treats my heart with such injustice.

So many, from his flanks and his eyes,

are the spears and swords from him within my heart!

I fell in love with him, though he recoils from my affection,

as generosity recoils from Ibn ʿAwf's nature.

So whoever hopes for bounty from his palms is like one hoping for

a downpour beneath a rainless summer cloud.

And were it not for the hadith master al-Silafi among us,

we would not have been safe from every fear.

An imam who, if we ask him for something great,

refuses to put us off with 'I will.'

Nowruz has come; enjoy it in happiness,

your honor free from flaw and falsity.
