    فدَعِ الجفاءَ فلست ممن يصبر

    Yours is a cheek that makes my eye rain tears;

    So abandon coldness, for I am not one who can endure.

    Far from it! The heart you burned is not—

    O languid-lidded one—one to grow languid.

    It is enough for me and you that your eyelid is drowsy

    For all time, and that my eyelid stays awake.

    فمدامعي حمرٌ ولوني أصفر

    You clothed me in the garb of passion, for all to see;

    So my tears are red, and my complexion yellow.

    And you exposed my entrails to torment—

    Within them lies a hidden working of yearning.

    O you whose shoulder is entwined with hair,

    The reproachers' words against loving you are deemed unbelief.

    If I have not heard my reproachers' words,

    Then, by your beauty, they have not seen you.
