You arrived as rain arrives, while the people were drought-stricken.

You returned like the full moon returning, while the horizon was dark.

The homelands rejoiced in you, and the bough stood tall,

in proud display above the rivers, while the meadow was delighted.

The land you inhabit grew fair through you,

and every place where glory grows is fair.

I swore by the days at the sacred sites of Mina,

and by all that al-Safa and al-Muhassab embraced during them:

a pillar of generosity indeed circled the corners,

where generosity's law is established and upheld.

God bless the eye that lined itself with your dust,

at the meeting of the two markers, as bounty flowed unceasingly.

When you completed the rites, you returned to Taybah,

your striving accepted and your purpose fruitful.

So I swear: al-Hatim and Mecca were not gladdened

more than al-Baqi' and Yathrib were.

From there you made for the Prophet's garden,

where you gathered the bloom of favor, lush and flourishing.

The Arab lands grew fair through Hamza's house,

and bounty poured all night from Hamza's palm.

You turned toward the lands of al-Sham, and they shone,

as though you were a star among the dwellings.

Whenever you visit a land, drought leaves its dwellings,

and is driven from it, fearful and watchful.

For a vision of you is a true vision of generosity,

and your door is a proven door to success.

If seekers of bounty have feared ruin in this age,

your favors have surely made their quest a pleasant one.

So every fingertip is silvered by your bounty,

and every age is gilded by your goodwill.

And every cloud but your generosity ceases to rain,

and every flash but your lightning falsely promises rain.

And rain may turn away from one who seeks it,

but your rain is a handspan away, or even closer.

Pouring rain was called a cloud only

because it slinks away in shame.

You shouldered what the clouds cannot manage to bear,

and attained eminence on foundations laid by grandfather and father.

You attained such eminence that Sa'd in the earth rejoiced

at your radiant nobility—nay, even Ya'rub rejoiced.

God keep you! How pure and noble your resolve,

and how fitting what you undertake and what you avoid!

I turned my quest toward you, away from every giver,

and said: 'A man more versed and practiced in generosity.'

You raised my verse beyond what it deserved,

and fulfilled my expectations beyond all reckoning.

You authenticated the reports of bounty, and I recounted them

as lofty traditions, retold and recorded at all times.

So if my hand has grasped a handhold in your bounty,

then your blessing has eased what was hard in my life.

May you live on for this age, bearing what it does,

and forgive its lapses when it sins.

For without you, no poet's praises would have prospered,

nor would their meters have found a means of gain.
