وثقت بتنكيد الفراق فأسبلت

Certain of separation’s torment, I set

I was certain of parting’s torment, so tears streamed

my eyelids flowing, and hastened what I expect.

From my eyelids, and I hastened what I await.

وما هي إلا مهجة ذاب شطرها

فسالت بها من فوق خدي أدمع

It is nothing but a heart, half of which has melted;

and with it tears streamed down over my cheek.

So tears flowed with it down my cheek.

وعما قليل ينفذ البين سهمه

Before long, separation will drive its arrow home;

And before long, separation will drive its arrow through,

then neither heart will remain, nor tears pour.

So no heart will remain, nor any tears stream.
