The pupil of my eye—its little man—is worn away by sleepless torment.
The pupil of my eye is worn away by hastened sleeplessness.
By my life, man was indeed created of haste.
By my life, man was indeed created of haste.

Though I conceal love, its signs will not remain concealed;
If I conceal love, its signs are not concealed;
and if I incline toward patience’s road, I cannot persist.
And though I turn toward patience's path, I cannot turn.

سباقة لسيوف اللحظ للعذل
I yearn for one guarded by reproachers—whenever she looks,
I long for one guarded by reproachers: if I look,
her glance outstrips sword-blades in rebuke.
She forestalls the swords of my glance with reproach.

The kohl-stick would not lift her eyelids for their languor.

I have lost my patience, yet shall never attain the taste of her saliva;
I have lost my patience and shall never obtain a drop of her saliva;
thus I have gained neither bitter sap nor honey.
So I have gained neither bitter sap nor honey.

In despite of all other beauties, she attained more than words describe:
Despite the beauties, she attained more than they described
beauty through ornaments, while they attained only some through wiles.
Through artifice, in loveliness; they gained but a portion through artifice.

have filled the world with your coquetry—and with ghazal.
Filled the world with your spinning and with love poetry.

May rain bless youth's days, when I would outrun her
at times, while she outstripped me in dalliance and dispute.
At times, and she would outrun me to play and wrangle.

I would catch her stumbling in the snares of my verse—
I would catch her, stumbling, in the snares of verse;
how lovely the gazelle caught in a cunning hunter’s nets!
How lovely the gazelle in a trapper's snares!

And sometimes I would trade laments with the bān-tree doves when she went far away:
theirs was wailing, and mine a flood of streaming tears.
From them came lamentation, and from me streaming tears.

perhaps bodies are sometimes restored to health by maladies.
And bodies sometimes become sound through ailments.

So passionate love, after today, is no desire of mine,
nor is weaving ghazal into panegyrics any occupation of mine.
Nor is love verse in panegyrics my occupation.

As though they were of parchment's tribe, before me.

So they sent pale camels, folding up the sands at a trot.

Your enemies are grazing beasts among the herds;
Your foes are among the livestock roaming at pasture;

So pray, sacrifice, endure, take pride, attack, and bestow.

Among the poets I have a garden: sweet is the fragrance
its tender basil, or its blossoms drenched with dew.
Of its tender basil or its dewy blossoms.

So doves fly away from it, along with partridges.
