  1. محو شعر المديح وكانَ ممَّا

    يقرّ نواظراً ويسرّ فكره

    The erasure of praise-poetry—and it had been something

    that delighted eyes and gladdened his mind.

  2. فليت يد المزين فيه أضحت

    لما قالوا معلَّقة بشعره

    So would that the barber’s hand, in his case, had become

    for what they said, suspended by his hair.
