فقامَ مقام المجتدي المتملق
The bough saw the curves of the tunic-clad gazelle,
The branch saw the gazelle's swaying sides
so it stood in the place of a fawning supplicant.
And stood like one infatuated, flattering

And answered him, while tears stepped forth, not knowing
It answered, with tears tracing its mouth, not knowing
whether it walked toward the sea or climbed toward the full moon.
Whether it walked to the sea or climbed to the full moon

God help me with a heart pursuing ardent longing:
May God give me a heart in following the youth
its reprover is like one who tells the celestial sphere, 'Go gently!'
Like one reproaching the sky saying "be gentle"

It leans towards the reproacher of youth and passion
when it wishes to toy with a fool's beard.
When it wishes to jest with the beard of a fool

And it listens to the talebearer, yet says nothing,
And listens to the slanderer though it says nothing
and passes judgment with knowledge of every fabricator.
And judges with torn knowledge

And flings the dust of its lead into a lover's face;
And stirs up the dust of racing in a lover's face
it showed him my dust, then said to him, 'Catch up!'
I see it as my dust, then it says to it "Enough"

Love-stricken by one whose figure bowed the spear in submission
It means one with a twisted spear, a follower
to one more practiced than it in thrusting, and more skillful.
So I can train in stabbing and become more skilled

With a fawn's eyelid: if you call it magic, that is no error;
With an eyelid sprinkled, if magic names it, it does not limit
and if you call it the sword's edge, how fitting!
And if it leaves it, it is the limit of sharp swords

yet whoever pelts the sea with stones will drown.
But one who pelts the sea will drown

Love—[unclear wording]—so-and-so's judgment, more fitting;
Passion is suited to the opinion of so-and-so
