مضى الأفضل المرجو للبأسِ والندى

وصحت على رغم العداة وفاته

وصحت على رغم العداة وفاته

Al-Afdal, looked to for valor and generosity, has passed away;

The best hoped for is gone for valor and dew

And his death was confirmed, to his enemies’ chagrin.

Yet his enemies' spite could not make him rue

وما مات أو ماتت بحزنٍ نساؤه

وما مات أو ماتت بحزنٍ نساؤه

وماتت بأحزان البلاد حماته

وماتت بأحزان البلاد حماته

He did not die—or rather, his women died of grief,

Nor did his women weep when he died

And his defenders died from the sorrows of the land.

But his land mourned the loss of its pride
